350 throwing belts

Hello everyone, I have a 73 Cutlass w/ a 350 thats a oval track stock car, it has the 3 groove pulleys. Its always had a problem w/ the belts loosening up after a run, but after the last three races the p/s belt has ended up around the fan and the alt belt stays in the groove but twists inside out. The p/s pump and alt are not loosening up and I've checked the pulleys for straightness, including shiming out the p/s pump 1/8 inch to line up better. Would it help any to move the alt to the right side of the motor? If I did would it line up w/ the pulleys or would I have to switch to the 2 groove ones?

Re: 350 throwing belts

I'd try a different brand of belt first, like a Gates Green Stripe. If it keeps on you need deep groove pulleys. Stock stuff wasn't designed for high RPM race duty.

Also check the water pump alignment. I got a RB pump one time that the pulley flange was cocked and the car kept throwing belts until I saw the ever so slight wobble- three times in less than 100 miles of driving <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/image...mlins/mad.gif" alt="" />. Talked enough caca to the counter guy when I took it back that he finally threw in new belts and antifreeze just to shut me up.

Thanks for the reply Glenn, yes I'm guilty of using the cheap belts from the local auto accesory store. I'll have to check that water pump too -Eric

Re: 350 throwing belts

I assume you have the two factory spacers between the PS pump bracket and the block.
