1962 Olds Starfire Convertible
I have a 1962 Olds Starfire convertible that I have owned for 15 years. I was under the impression that it was original. The numbers on the engine match. Recently I tried to sell it and a person came to look at it and said it was not original as it had a two barrel carb. He told me that Starfires only came with 4bbl carbs. Can someone tell me if this is true or false?

Re: 1962 Olds Starfire Convertible
'62 Starfires were originaly 4bls. It is possible that someone switched it to a 2bl intake/carb for gas milage or had a ruined 4bl carb. Henry.

Re: 1962 Olds Starfire Convertible
I'd say someone got tired of messing with a recalcitrant Rochester 4GC four-barrel (nasty, hateful, damnable piece of junk!) and took the easy way out to keep the car roadable. The throttle valve rod for the Slim Jim transmission doesn't cooperate too well with any other four-barrel carb, but it can be adapted to a Rochester 2GC two-barrel.
Actually the only number on the engine that could identify it as a Starfire engine is the S suffix on the engine unit number, which in those days rarely matched the car's VIN. I've never seen another way to do it on a pre-1965 Olds engine. You can find the Julian date codes and tell if it's "probably" the original engine. The unit number is stamped into the left cylinder head right above the center exhaust ports.
Or on a long shot, if you can find the car's history, you may find you have an export low compression car. Such things happened, even with Starfires.
