1956 heater duct removal

Help! How do you remove the interior heater duct on passenger side? It appears to have a metal part that surrounds the duct and is fastened to the backside of the duct with 2 screws. This metal part seems to be securely fastened to something else. Do I have to remove the heater core, and consequently all the exterior blower motor ducting? This is a non-AC car and the shop manual and parts books are of no use.
Thanks. Ed

Re: 1956 heater duct removal

I just discovered that the shop manual is slightly misprinted (column out of place). It indicates that I do have to remove the heater core. I was really trying to avoid that. I forgot to mention that '54 to '56 appear to be the same. Sorry to take the forum space unnecessarily.

Not a problem. The tip might save someone else some aggravation.

Re: 1956 heater duct removal

I finally got the heater core and duct out. The problem was that a previous owner had used a good silicone adhesive type sealer on the deformed sponge rubber seal. Now I would like to find a new seal (Group 8.863, p/n 3131335) or a suggestion on a soft sponge material to use to make a new seal. The original was probably molded. Fusick doesn't show one. '54 to '56 are the same. Thanks for any suggestions.

Find what you need in McMaster-Carr. I cut most of the sponge seals I need (including 55 Olds) from sheet foam they sell. I reccomend a closed cell neoprene of soft/medium density.......Bob
