to detail or not to detail

Looking for informed opinions. My 1964 Starfire Convert. has 48,xxx on the clock. Had exterior repaint 12 or 13 yrs ago. Has new springs on rear. Top skin may have been replaced in past. Everything else appears to be original.
On a vehicle such as this, would an engine repaint/detail add to the value or detract from it?

Re: to detail or not to detail

Unless the engine compartment is exceptionally clean, presentable and no excessive wear on painted surfaces, IMHO an engine detail would add to the car. It's had enough other work to knock it out of OCA unrestored or AACA HPOF classes.

But, your call. Block Olds red, valve covers/aircleaner warm silver, other painted surfaces 60% gloss black. Just remember that simple underhood details sometimes snowball into other things...

For a car in the overall condition you describe the value is not likely to be altered enough to amount to a hill of beans. However, if you are asking the question because you are mulling over selling the car a nice clean engine compartment will always enhance merchantability. (also greatly appreciated by anyone having to perform maintenance).

You shouldn't even consider a repaint of the engine with the engine in the vehicle because it will leave over spray where you don't want it and/or miss portions of the engine, not to mention the fact you can't degrease a block in the car well enough to keep from wasting paint that will simply be flaking off a week later.
