Over the years I've been envious of those whom have found little treasures inside theirs Packards. I've read with much interest when others have found 'build-sheets' and other historical documents inside their precious Grand Avenue Motor cars. . Well today, I was rewarded with something quite interesting! Yes, I found something that I've NEVER seen or heard of before inside my Packard.
While in the garage today, I replaced my fuel tank. Having cleaned the area underneath the trunk, I put a 'new/ gas tank back into my 1955 400. The only thing I need to do now is secure the 5/16" new steel line to the [censored] end of the tank and we are ready to bring fuel forward! Anyway, I then decided to clean out the trunk because I'm running and brand new (Painless) wiring harness throughout the car. Along with the brakes/license/stop light systems etc., I needed to run the wire for the fuel sender. Thus I needed to get into the trunk proper.
It brought a tear to my eye pulling up the trunk liner as I hear that the 'correct or original' liner is going for $70. a square foot nowadays. Anyway, it was a dirty job (tar paper underneath) but I found a gem under the interior trunk material. What I found was obviously placed there long ago by a Packard Union Man! I found an old UAW-CIO card urging Packard Unionists to vote for certain candidates running for Local 190.
The document reminds members to vote in an election scheduled for May 10-12, 1955. The document calls for the members to 'Take the Company Out of the Union' and it illustrates the sentiment by one hand (Local 190) slapping another (labeled Packard) with a ruler! The card goes on to state that the platform of the Union is as follows:
-Retirement at 60 years and $200 a month
- 7 Paid holidays
-Reduce Probation to (30) days
-Make the Company pay for full cost of hospital and insurance premiums
- One contract for all Packard employees without signing a waiver to apply seniority from one plant to another.
UAW VOTE the Ray Battestilli Unity Slate!
