Valve adjustment
I have a question about adjusting valves. Surfing around other car marquee websites, I have noticed on some the procedure is to get the engine warmed, shut it off and then setting the #1 cylinder to a firing position, then adjusting some of the valves. Then turning the engine 180 degrees and setting the others. Is there a similar procedure for a 48 Packard? Seems it would be easier than trying to set them while the engine is running.

Re: Valve adjustment
The cold stationary setting is usually (but not always) used for engines with HYDRAULIC lifters. The Chevy V8's r a good example. Any enine that fires 18436572 (chevy and Packard V8's) can be set using the procedure outlined in either the Packard or chevy manual. I prefer the cold stationary setting of valve lash. The hot running procedure is probably better BUT requires alot of practice. If the firing order is diffrent from the 18436572 then u should be able to extrapolate the procedure using the 18436572 method. Then double check it hot and running.

Re: Valve adjustment
I did the 54 valves on mine with a warm (not running) engine and it still made quite a noise after, so I figured try it by the book adjust them running, quit a difference that straight 8 is as quiet as my 4 cyl pontiac.

Re: Valve adjustment
My 42 engine is noisy. How do you go about this proceedure? I at least have some advantage in that I have the inner fender off.

Re: Valve adjustment
warm the motor up to normal operating temp, remove the axcess covers (2)on the 50's and using 2 1/2inch wrenches adjust the clearence between the lifter & the valve to the specs making sure which valve is which (intake & exaust clearances are diff) the feeler guage should just fit with the engine running.
