| Packard hood ornament questions Hello,
It has been a while since I have been to this site.
I have a casting business and I was contacted by my plating shop about a Packard hood orn that he has to replate.
The problem is that it is broken in a few places.
What I need to know is, are there any wings being made for this orn?
If not, I am going to make some up.
Would there be much interest in wings for this, if I did?
What all years was this orn used on?
Thanks in advance for any help on this project.

| Re: Packard hood ornament questions Sorry to hear that your "Packard Duck" is "all quacked up". Yeah, we affectionately call it a duck. Technically, it was first described by Packard as a comorant, then later a swan. It was an option starting in the early-mid 1930's, continued almost to end when the company folded in '56. Over the years, it became so popular as a symbol of grace and elegant luxury that you can even find modified interpetations of swan hood ornaments in the JC Whitney catalogue (which explains why I have seen em on big diesel trucks)
Dont waste your money trying to fix a broken one. They ARE available new of excellent quality - I dont want to seem like a "hack" for any particular Packard parts seller, so I wont go putting names in here, but they have been reproduced by several vendors for some forty years now. |

| Re: Packard hood ornament questions Seems the owner doesn't want to spend big moneyu on a new on at this time.
I took the bird apart today and am making the patterns up for the wings.
He has another one with the maiden holding the wheel, that needs repaired also.
We will see how they come out.
Welding pot-metal that is newer is easy, but the older metal is tough.

a questionable old piece. It's kind of a "ya pay now or you pay later" kind of thing.

| Re: Packard hood ornament questions I believe you can buy just the wings. You don't need to buy the whole bird.

| Re: Packard hood ornament questions My shop time is $35.00 per hour. I have been casting parts for over 30 years.
I cast up replacement sections for older pot-metal parts that there is no replacement for.
Several restoration shops have been having me make parts for them for some rare cars.
White Post Restorations is one of them.
Recently made up some parts for an Allard, Reo, Chrysler, Studebaker and Chevrolet.
