| Gas Filler Gasket??? When I open my gas door I can see all the way to the ground. Was there originally a rubber gasket or anything between the filler and the housing that surrounds it? I have looked through the parts listings and I cannot locate anything.

| Re: Gas Filler Gasket??? I don't think so. The same gas tank was used from 51-56 and my 56 never had a gasket or any deflector.
It does seem strange as my tail pipe is right below the filler neck and when gas sloshes over it falls right on the tail pipe.

| Re: Gas Filler Gasket??? THe 54's don't really need anything there, the only time i have any gas leak out of the filler neck is if i take corners too fast. I have been thinking of changing the filler neck to one off a modern car, as they have a flap inside for the unleaded fuel nozzels. |

I never thought about that flap inside the filler. Good point there. I was just refering to the visual look from the perspective of newer cars. They usually have a rubber or plastic surround that fills in the area between gas door opening and the filler neck.
We at least the good thing is if you over fill the tank, the gas drips right down on the ground instead of down the painted side of your car.

Hey, Pre-war Packards didn't even have a Door, just a cap sticking out where 'Everyone Can See'. You should consider yourself Lucky, that you have a Door to hide the Ugly thing.

| Re: Gas Filler Gasket??? No, when the gas sloshes back it spills down the outside and the inside
The ends of the pump nozzles are smaller now and don't shut off as well as they used to because the older cars don't have that flap. I thought of making an insert for the neck that would also contain a whistle, ala 1950 and earlier Packards, that would serve to contain the backsplash.

| Re: Gas Filler Gasket??? Its only does it on right hand corners, and the gas does splash out onto the paint. i have a couple of extra tanks, and was going to cut off the top part of the neck and weld the top off a modern tank that i can get a locking vented cap for. I will be filling the tank full of water up the neck before i do the welding, dont want to go boom.. I have made new filler necks before for some of the jap cars that had rotted out, and where no longer being made out of exhaust pipe. |

| Re: Gas Filler Gasket??? Yes, A funnel shaped insert is easyer to make and fit, than a flap type insert.

| Re: Gas Filler Gasket??? That would be a neat idea to come up with an insert that you would press into the end of the existing filler that contains the flap and has the smaller hole. Then you could always pry it back out if you wanted to go original. I bet you could sell a few of those on ebay.
