Re: NYS increases Historical Reg fee

Two years ago we in Vajenya were slapped with a 500% increase in our antique plate fees, though ours ARE permanent issue plates. That was still a lot to swallow at once, especially when the state legislator patroning it lied to our faces in a church sanctuary about why it was done.

I took my revenge in the voting booth then, and I intend to do the same again this November. His challenger this time is better known than the one last time.

Ummm ... The fee for a lifetime registration went from $10.00 to $50.00. Not exactly breaking the bank. Even if you own several cars when you take into account what ours cars are worth and the fact that we pay no personal property tax on them. Now THAT would be something to scream about.

I do agree that Danny Marshall needs to get the boot.

Re: NYS increases Historical Reg fee

Bill, big deal the $50 fee, it was the principle of the thing. Marshall calls himself a car guy ("I'm one of you" he says) and then monkeyed with the statutes to increase the fees. He claimed it was about cleaning up antique car registrations and making sure clunkers and daily drivers weren't wearing antique plates.

Baloney. It was about the money. If it HAD been about questionable plates, I don't think the cops here would have told me they had plenty of more pressing business and enforcing it was low priority work for them.

When asked point blank how the VSP planned to enforce the new statutes, the State Trooper in attendance at Marshall's Q&A session in Lynchburg looked straight at Marshall and said "When Mr. Marshall tells us how to do it." They realised the new statutes were as unenforceable as Marshall claimed the originals were. They were enforceable if DMV and LE had put forth the effort.

Marshall's challenger this year is an old car and bike enthusiast and much better known than Adam Tomer. Adam came within 600 votes of unseating him, so former Danville Mayor Seward Anderson should fare better. I think Marshall realises that, because the Marshall campaign signs have been up for three months- they went up two days after Anderson announced his candidacy, long before ANYONE else's, and there are multiple races going on here this year.

Re: NYS increases Historical Reg fee

I don't disagree with anything you say. I and every other hobbyest in the Commonwealth would love to see Marshall go away for good.

My only point is when people hear that we (in Virginia) only pay $50.00 for a LIFETIME registration, they go: "Wait a minute! My registration costs me $XX.XX each year!"

Or they hear that we pay no personal property tax;

Or no state inspection, safety or emissions;

etc.

These people get upset and try to change things. Owning and driving an antique is a privledge, not a right. And with that privledge come restrictions. We all know it is about money, but we need to pick our battles.

So how much a year do you pay for your daily driver?

What is the reason that antique plates are now the same or slightly more than regular plates?

Re: NYS increases Historical Reg fee

Which is why it bugs me when people complain about Virginia's antique laws. We are much more liberal than many states. Some states are truly draconian.

Are you suggesting that an annual safety inspection unreasonable? It's only $10.
