Water flow in heads

My feeble mind seems to remember an article in the Zephyr mag discussing different style head gaskets in reference to coolant flow in the head. Something about different brand gaskets having different holes for directing flow, One being better than the other. Anyone remember the specifics? The coolant flow out of my engine at the radiator is about 180 degrees, just what it should be. However if I measure temp of the head closer to rear I get 240. I am thinking I am getting too much flow in the front and not enough going through the back of the head. Any body have any suggestions?

Also, Rolf, Is your Ultimate V-12 article available?

Hi Royce, Jack sure wrote a glowing report about the Skip's water pumps he solved his heating troubles with, have heard nothing bad about them, so that may be the answer, those enlarged water hole gaskets seem like a good idea, but am not sure there is any conclusive experiences with them, would be good to hear from some folks who have used them. I have a ream of stuff on the Ultimate V-12, way too much to put here, write me off-forum with what you would like to do to your 12, and I will send you anything you want, and everybody remember the need for a '36-'38 brake drum and hub, he needs it bad and will pay a fair price for one--

I used the new gaskets from Fel-Pro along with the water pumps from skips, the holes in the new head gaskets are about 3/4 inch in the rear water passages compared to the originals being about a 1/4 inch in the back. you can get them from narraganset for 25 each, cheaper than I have found the old style gaskets. Iam also running 155 thermostats and the engine hasnt got over 180 in rush hour traffic, I take the thermostates out in the summer.

Forgot to ask if you have the brass water deflectors behind your water pumps? if not narraganset sells the also, they keep the water flowing towards the rear of the motor so its not just circulating in the front of the engine. when you pull your pumps off you will be able to see or feel them, if they are there.

Yes I do have the deflectors in place. Forgive my ignorance .. Who is Narraganset? Was the controversey over head gaskets whether the water passages toward the front of the head should be restricted?

I would show you the difference in the head gaskets but lost the pictures when my old computer crashed. Narraganset is a Lincoln parts supplier, check suppliers in the lincoln web site. the holes in the old copper gaskets had smaller holes toward the back of the heads restricting the water flow and causing the back cylinders to run hotter than the fronts, the new gaskets have all the same large hole front to back helping to keep the rear cylinders at a more even temp, they will still run hotter due to the length the water has to travel, thats where the water pumps from Skips help. they have a new design impeller and flow almost 3 times the amount of water. plus they have new sealed bearings front and rear and a new stainless steel shaft which makes for a leak proof and longer lasting pump and one thats eaiser to rebuild in the future. about the only other thing you coud do to help cooling would be aluminum heads and finned aluminum would be even better.that and making sure your engine is tuned and hitting on all 12.
