6 Volt Alternator

Hey everyone I need info about installing a 6 volt positive ground alt on my '48 Continental. I know that I will need a bracket, excititor wire and a wide grove pulley. I'm more concerned about dependability then authenticity. Does anyone have first hand experience? Thanks George

A generator is just as dependable, only lower output. FWIW, I'd go with a rebuilt generator with a properly set up regulator. That is a lot easier and cheaper than fabricating prackets, pulley changes, etc.

A lot of Model A Ford guys use positive ground alts with a wide pulley.Most model a suppliers stock them.They are made from the older style GM alternators and last forever.These are one wire systems easy to install.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been in contact with Fifth Ave, they only have neg ground alternators. They suggest reversing the battery terminals and amp wires to compensate for the neg ground alt. I can get a positive ground unit and for less money. But was wondering if there was a concern with the amp gauge since the alt puts out 45amps and the stock generator is 30-33amps. Can the amp gauge handle the extra amps? I've decided to go with the alternator set-up cause I'm tired of messing around with the regulator adjustments. I bouhgt a new replacement regulator from that place in Rhode Island (looks like something I could have bought from JC Whitney) and I spend an afternoon adusting it,too much and I over charged the battery,too little and undercharge. Setting with cover off is different when cover is put on,too much work.I'll let ya know how it works out come spring/summer time. Thanks George

Please tell me where you found the pos grd 6 volt alternator and for how much.. Did it also include the mounting bracket and correct size pulley? Glenn Lorei (b6vt)

Hi all, I got my alternator from Auto Electric and Battery.They are located in Hillsboro, OR. They sell on Ebay which is where I puchased it from. The cost was $80. $15. for the 5/8s wide pulley plus shipping.It's a positive ground one wire alternator which means that I don't have to change polarity or worry about the radio that I had FM added to.The bracket I purchased from Fifth Ave. cost $86. with shipping. A little grinding was needed to make the alternator fins clear the bracket and the bracket to fit the manifold. Everything works fine. Once the engine is started you raise the RPMs to 1200 and the alternator starts and stays charging. Fifth Ave alternators are negative ground and more costly. I will try to attach a picture.

I built my own 6 volt pos ground alt, cost me about 35 bucks with the kit and an old si10 gm from the junk yard. but if you go to Sacramento Vintage Ford, the sell the alt or a generator that is converted to an alt. and thay have the brackets to mount them also.

I found a bracket to mount GM one wire alternators on e-bay. Ford unit works fine on Lincolns. After much trepidation, I found converting to 12V negative ground isn't too much of a hassle. Had to make a voltage drop circuit for the instruments and use a few resistors. Haven't tackled the radio yet, but looks like changing a few capacitors would do the trick.
