1948 Continetal Rear Axle

Have a 1948 Continental with pitting in the rear wheel bearing inner race. This is the section that is part of the axle housing. What is the repair for this problem? Thank You, Jay

Re: 1948 Continetal Rear Axle

These bearing cups are pressed into the axle housing and can be replaced as can the bearing cones pressed on the differential carrier. These bearings carry Ford part numbers and are common with other Ford and Mercs of the era. Replacement of these bearing will require some readjustment of the ring and pinion mesh along with bearing preload. These adjustments were accomplished with the use of paper shim gaskets between the axle housing and the center banjo. You may want to seek the help of someone experienced with early Ford axles. The bearing cones may or may not be ok so they should be checked also.

I think we have a missunderstanding. The type of axle in this 1948 has no pressed cups. It appears that the roller bearing in the brake drum rides directly on the axle housing. Further research looks like Ford intended the repair to include replacing the entire axle housing. Am I reading that correctly? If so, what do all the Ford folk do to repair these bearings?

Yes, sorry about that. I mis-read your post and was thinking you meant the bearing in the differential. The wheel bearing surface on the axle housing can be repaired. This envoves machining the bearing surface and pressing on a sleeve. You might be able to find a good used housing but repairing what you have may be the best solution.

A good machine shop can turn the surface down to press on a new sleeve. I had this done on my 1941 Ford and bought the sleeves from Macs.
