Looking for technical assistance

My guess is that I'll probably hear from either Judy or Peter in response to my request, and I thought about going to them directly. Then I decided to post my question here in case anyone else would like to do what I'm contemplating.

I would like to show off our region's website at a few of our upcoming meetings. The truth is, our region has an older demographic. Many members don't have Internet access and, frankly, wouldn't know what to do with it if they had it. I know that Judy has been able to put the Junior website onto a CD, because she had one with her at the annual meeting this year. She said she keeps it for backup. Well, that piece of knowledge -- putting the site on CD -- was never communicated to me. (Maybe I was sleeping during that portion of the program?) Does anyone know how to do it? And could you communicate that process to me in steps that I can grasp on a Monday morning after a weekend of 85 degree sunshiny days?

Re: Looking for technical assistance

Jan,

There are a couple of ways that you can do this. The simplest way is just to copy the entire web page just like you copy any file. How you do it will depend on the CD writer software you have and the way you formated the CD.

1. With my CD software, I can format a CD so that I can copy directly to the CD drive just like any other drive. I just go to [color:\\"red\\"]Exlporer , go to the folder [color:\\"red\\"]Webshare, (which is where I store my web page), do a [color:\\"red\\"]File and Copy. Then I go to my CD drive and do a [color:\\"red\\"]Paste . It will take a few minutes depending on the size of your web page.

2. I can use the software that came with the CD writer and do a copy by dragging the file folder from its stored destination to the CD drive. I then will have to hit the record button.

Hope that helps.

Re: Looking for technical assistance

Time to expose more of my ignorance. To my knowledge, my website is only on the AACA server. I log into the server each time and make any changes on the fly. I don't believe there is a backup copy on my computer (but I could be wrong). I'll take a look around in FrontPage and see if there's anything that looks promising. If not, then I guess I'll have to find a way to copy our website from the server back to my own computer and/or CD.

Re: Looking for technical assistance

Jan,

My web pages are stored on my hard drive and in a folder called webshare. After I make changes or additions, I then publish my web page to the AACA server. You can do it either way, work on-line or off-line, but I prefer to work off-line. That way when experimenting with scripts and etc, I do not screw up the live version of my web page.

==================================================

Good news! Not only can you publish to the AACA server but you can publish from the AACA server to your hard drive also. To do this -

1. On the File menu, click Publish Web.

2. In the Publish Destination dialog box, do one of the following:

o Type the path ? for example C:\My Website ? to the folder on your file system.

o Click Browse to locate the folder.

Note: If you have previously chosen a publish destination for this web site, the Publish Destination dialog box will not appear. Proceed to step 4.

3. Click OK.

4. Specify the pages you want to publish by -

a. In the Publish Web dialog box, click Options in the lower left corner.
b. Click the Publish tab, and do one or more of the following:
§ Under Publish, specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed, or all pages.
§ Under Changes, specify how you want FrontPage to determine which pages have been changed.
§ If you want to create a log file for changes made during publishing, select that check box.
c. Click OK.

5. To publish subwebs, select the Include subwebs check box.

6. Click Publish.

Note: If you cancel publishing in the middle of the operation, files that have already been published remain on the destination folder.

=====================

If you are going to demo your web page, I would reccomend that you store a copy of your web page on your hard drive. If you work off a CD, you might have to wait while Front Page accesses the CD. Also, now that you have a copy stored on your hard drive, you can edit it and then publish to the AACA server. Just name your destination file http://www.aaca.org/wisconsin/ and publish.

Re: Looking for technical assistance

Just a thought why would you want your web site on a CD if these folks your trying to recrute are not computer savy. I have in the past printed out the first page of our web site and someof the story pages and handed them out to those interested in joining the club. We do have a news letter also and hand them out at shows.
It's nice to have a back up of the web site on CD but I do that automaticly each time I refesh the site.
I'm the web master for a few club, Keystone Cops MTFCI, Ford Ton Truck Club MTFCI and Wayne -Pike AACA clubs, and I have each one backed up not only on line but in my computer and on a CD. Heaven forbid the server goes down or my computer crashes, At least I have the web sites on cd.

Re: Looking for technical assistance

A good number of our members are not computer savvy, but they know people who are. I want them to see our website, realize how easy it is to navigate, and talk about it with their friends and family. The site just doesn't pack the same punch when it's printed out on paper.

If I'm to keep our website fresh, I'll need a constant stream of new material. I pull some from our newsletter, but some pictures and articles could also come from these older members. If they get excited about the site, they're more likely to contribute material to it. And it's that enthusiasm I'm trying to foster.
