'28 GE-F Clutch Adjustment
As most of you know, my '28 GE is on the road and we're having a ton of fun with it. I just drained the radiator for the winter, and will be driving again come March or April.
While she's laid up, I'd like to adjust the clutch. It seems that no matter what I do, the gears grind between 1st and 2nd and again between 2nd and 3rd. This happens no matter how fast or slow I shift and no matter if I double clutch or not. I am assuming clutch adjustment.
Can someone give me a primer on how to do this, tools needed, where I need to access on the transmission, etc.?
Would be greatful as always,
Regards,

Re: '28 GE-F Clutch Adjustment
Keith : I was wondering if you had the clutch and presure plate rebuilt ? If you didn't has someone else? I need to know this before I can begin to understand your problem......

Re: '28 GE-F Clutch Adjustment
No one that I know of has ever done the clutch, at least as far back as 1964 when the car entered our family.
Thanks,
Keith

Re: '28 GE-F Clutch Adjustment
Hello Keith; I would say you should try to see if you have any adjustment left on your clutch. I would first put the car up on jack stands and then see what kind of adjustment you have. Probably on the left side of the bell housing you will find the lever that moves the throwout bearing in and out to the clutch fingers. You should have very little movement in and out with that arm. If you can move it say an inch or more you need to take out most of the slack by adjusting the linkage from the arm to the throwout bearing. About a 1/4" freeplay . You have to have freeplay where the throw out bearing is not riding on the clutch fingers....

Re: '28 GE-F Clutch Adjustment
Keith: Maybe the clutch disc is worn so much that there is not enough clearance to release the the transmission completely. The other problem is that you might be using to light of a transmission oil. Model A's use a 600wt. oil that slows down the transmission allowing shifting without the grinding gear thing......

Re: '28 GE-F Clutch Adjustment
Studepeople,
Thank you!! I'll give you a call a little later. Both things you mention make sense to me. I wondered if the transmission oil that was put in made everything a little too "lossey goosey". I'll check that. I also wondered if i may have taken the clutch lining down a little too much in my first days of getting used to the car. I'll need to explore both if an adjustment does not work out.
Thanks,
Keith
