1934 President Water jacket

Hi:

I am restoring a 1934 President which was partly restored but never finished. The engine was supposedly redone a few years ago but never used because it overheated. I already started it and it sounds and feels alright, but after about half an hour, it does overheat. I took the water cover out and it turns out it has a horrid home made water jacket with very small holes, which may very well be the cause of the problem. I have never seen a good one or know how it is supposed to look like.

would anybody have one for sale? Ot could anybody direct me to a source to buy either a good one or a reproduction?

Thanks,
Victor

Re: 1934 President Water jacket

I can't directly help with your question whether any one has reproduced a 1934 "C" model water jacket yet, but I would question whether the water pump inlet hose has an internal metal wire coil insert to prevent it from collapsing when heated and subject to the water pump suction.

This is a common fault with earlier President 8's that over the years were "modified" by eliminating the original rigid metal pipes from radiator outlet to water pump inlet because it made servicing the pump difficult or the metal pipe was an unusual diameter and not readily available.

Check that lower hose for an insert coil by squeezing it when hot by hand (the rubber gets soft when hot).

Stude8:

Thanks for the tip, I'll check on it. however, my car has no water jacket, only the external cover, and an internal home made cover with very, very small holes on it, so I am pretty sure my overheating problem has to be partly caused by the incorrect water jacket.

Thanks,
Victor

Victor,

I can get you some pictures of what the baffles are supposed to look like, perhaps even make some up. What condition is your external cover in?

Send me a Personal Message. I do have pictures and an article by Bill Cannon. It has complete instructions and pictures so you can rebuild your own.
Email me and I will send them to you.

Re: 1934 President Water jacket

Thanks guys! I do have an external cover in good condition, but any internals that it once had are gone now. In their place, a home made flat panel with very tiny holes was made.

Any pics are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help,
Victor

I believe that the internal distribution plates are the same for a lot of years. Here is a pic.

Thanks,

Re: 1934 President Water jacket

Victor,

The same manifold was used on various 8 cylinder models from 1929 to 1937. In 1938 the water pump was moved to the front of the block.

The round holes are 3/8". The D shaped holes are 1.475" high by .56 wide at the center. The "flaps" are 1.57" high by 1.37" wide.

I was fortunate to have found a NOS one at Hershey several years back.

Re: 1934 President Water jacket

Thanks a lot! That pic, measurements, plus drawing and instructions, will hopefully solve my problem.

I hope to have the car on the road soon and see how it behaves.

Thanks again for all the help,
Victor
