Locomobile of the Teens

Hello out there,

Could someone tell me the differences between the Locomobile Model 38 and Model 48 engines of the teens (1915/1916)? Or perhaps the differences between the Models in general? I'm especially interested in bore and strokes, but anything else is appreciated. I can't find much information on these cars.

Thanks --- Scott

Re: Locomobile of the Teens

Scott...There is very little technical info on these great automobiles out there, from what I can see. All I have is the info in the "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805 to 1942". According to this volume, Locomobile produced two models in 1915 and 1916; the type 38 with a six cylinder 43.3hp engine and a 132" and 140" wheelbase and the type 48 with a six cylinder 48.6hp T-head engine carried on a 140" and 143" wheelbase. There are quite a few of these cars that have survived; hopefully, one of the owners or a knowledgable collector out there will fill us in with more info.

Scott...why not give the Library & Research Center a try for "factual data"?

Your questions certainly are an excellent case example for the L&RC archives assistance.

Open the AACA main page and click on the Library & Research Center forum. There is a self-explanatory request for information form.

Re: Locomobile of the Teens

Both were 6 cylinder T-heads. The Model 48 had about 525 cubic inches and dual spark plugs. The Model 38 had about 420 cubic inches and single ignition. I'm looking to buy a Model 48 Sportiff if anyone knows of one for sale.

Great info! By any chance, does your book mention (or do you know) whether the transmissions were direct drive in high, or overdrive?

Re: Locomobile of the Teens

The "Ball" carb was actually a "Ball & Ball" model, manufactured by the Penberthy Injector Company.

Re: Locomobile of the Teens

Fourth gear is direct on the 1915 and 1916 Locomobiles. Final rear end ratio on the 48 was 3.5:1 and the 38HP was 3.80:1.

There werent very many cars which had overdrive 4 speed transmissions in that era. In 1914, they were:
Herreschoff
Hudson
Jeffrey
Keeton
KisselKar
Kline
Moon
Norwalk
Pathfinder
Republic
Speedwell
Staver
Velie
Winton

Good Luck,

Greg
