Gas Tank Renu - Tank Cleaning, Any Good?

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has used the Gas Tank Renu company. I have a tank that desperately needs cleaning but when I called their Houston dealer he said they drill a bunch of 2" holes in the tank during the cleanout process, then patch them up and coat the tank inside and out. What do all these holes look like on the outside after they are done? My tank looks OK now on the outside and I'm concerned the patches will be visible. Also would like to know if anyone has had problems and used their "lifetime warranty", how did that work? Thanks!

Re: Gas Tank Renu - Tank Cleaning, Any Good?

I used them around 5 years ago and am 100% happy with the finished product. Since my gas tank is exposed in the front trunk area I didn't want them to coat the outside of the tank however they did do the exterior ends (don't see). I wanted to finish it in the correct gloss black so I waved the outside coating (and the warranty). I have had zero problems plus I was told the exterior coating was just a precaution.

They put in new metal where the rust holes are(you will see the patches) but do nothing with the dents. If you have dents it is best to work them out prior to giving the tank to them.

Thanks to all who replied. Bill, Don Hart was who I called, it's good to hear your recommendation. I'm a little concerned about shipping the tank to them, they said to drain it, flush with water, duct tape the holes and ship it UPS. Is that really going to take care of any gas fumes, I would hate to hear about a UPS truck blowing up on the way to Houston!

Their gas tank cleaning may be good, but i don't recommend getting there coating put on your gas tank unless its a total last resort, just buy a new one if you can, it will be cheaper in the long run. I had mine done some time over 10 years ago and now have big problems, the coating came off and plugged the carburetor. I pulled the gas tank out and looking inside to discover it looks like its rusting worse than ever. When i contacted RENU about the problem they were unwilling to repair it because i dont have the original receipt of when it was done. They Tag every one of their repaired tanks with a brass Id tag serial number, youd think that would be good enough for a reputable company that stands behind there product.

Click on links for a look of what happened to mine in just a few years in classic car owner time.

This pic is amazing its the bottom side of the gas tank and still looks great.

And here is why i chose to have this done:

I brought in a 1928 Graham-Paige tank, they cleaned it and put the inside coating in. I painted the outside myself. I have been extreamly happy and the price was reasonable. If I had the option to buy a new tank I would do that even if it were more expensive, nothing like new metal.

    Good luck

I have a similar problem to Mike M. a few years after having my tank done the inside coating started flaking off. To be honest I don't know how Renu will handle the situation as I still haven't taken the tank in to be repaired. I've just kept the tank at least 1/4 full and if there is any loose coating floating around in the tank it hasn't caused a problem yet. One of these days I'll have to find the receipt and pull the tank. I didn't know I needed the receipt as I had also assumed the plate would be sufficient. In retrospect I do know they said they will only honor the warranty to the original owner.

Lifetime warranty that only applies to the original owner never made any sense to me. What does a change in ownership have to do with the quality of work that was originally performed? Seems like a money grab. Plus not standing behind their work unless the original receipt is provided seems bush league to me (especially when they can track the tank by the ID tag they install). I have two tanks that need to be refurbished and the above complaints are enough to have me look elsewhere. Amazing how it only takes a few bad reviews to overshadow lots of good reviews.

I have a set of digital Gauges (Nordskog) in on of my cars that have a lifetime warrantee. It must have been the lifetime of the company as I cannot find a temp sender. Not even for sale.

I had the tank in my '52 Plymouth done in the mid-1990's. It was like Swiss cheese when I brought it to them. It has been solid and leak-free all these years.
