Gas Smell

I'm a new comer into the classic car scene. Just purchased a 1979 Lincoln Town Coupe with 77,000 miles. I'm discovering a strong gas smell while driving and then it gets really strong when the car is shut off and in the garage. I don't seen anything leaking out, but I'm also not use to this age of a car. Help...any ideas?
Thank You,
KentO

Re: Gas Smell

just a thought, could be your carb boiling after you shut it down. best thing to do is to start it up and let it run a few min and follow the fuel line from the tank all the way up. look around the carb for dampness as the heat of the engine will make gas leaking evaporate quickly. also might concider the top of the fuel tank may have a few holes from standing water/salt.
just a thought

Re: Gas Smell

As I am sure you are aware, Gas fumes are highly explosive. Probably not a good idea to store inside till problem is fixed.
Can you tell if the smell is from front or back of car.

Try pulling the dipstick. is the oil level too high, or does oil seem diluted or smell like gas. Could be a flooding problem.

Improperly vented gas cap can cause problems. Don't know what type you need, maybe someone else on this forum can help.
