engine just stalled on 39 buick
i just finished putting my last piece of body molding on and was starting the car to take it for a spin and she just stalled and won"t start now.she seems to be spinning a little faster than normal, which leaves me to believe the timing chain.is ther a way to check if i pull the fuel pump? i have spark and fuel.

Re: engine just stalled on 39 buick
A real quick way to see if your timing belt is connected would be to remove the valve cover and watch the valves. If they don"t open and close then something is amiss with your timing chain. It's possible that it got loose and jumped a couple of teeth. If your valves are operating then you need to check valve timing.

so if it got loose and jumped a couple of teeth, would that mean that the chain is broken or is there a way to tighten them.the car was running good for the past month then she just shut down.

You might just try this...take the distributor cap off and turn the engine over. See if the rotor turns. If not, look at the gear at the base of the distributor shaft. That same thing happened to me once in my 1970 Plymouth GTX 440. It just died and if it had not been for another local MOPAR guy, it would have taken me forever to find the problem. Just my own thoughts about my own experience.

Re: engine just stalled on 39 buick
well i located the problem which was the points.after taking off the distibutor cap{thanks keiser}i noticed that the points were not touching due to one side being above the other side.i bent it back down and she started right up.im puzzled as to why it bent, but happy it was not the timing chain, thanks
