Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

Can anyone tell me if rebuild kits are available for AC model 6V2404 electric fuel pumps. I need a name or an address where I could get one. I am also looking for a source for rebuilding a standard fuel pump for a 1932 Chevrolet. Thanks for any help that you may be able to send my way.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

Ken, on that electric fuel pump model # 6V2404, that is the same numbers that are on my Walbro 6 Volt elect. pump, it's a bellows type, you can get a new one from J.C.Whitney, ( item # 73XD2971U ) it runs around $40.00 + shipping. I also found a place that sells parts for them, but I haven't call them yet to get any prices. As for a fuel pump for your 32, you can try Kanter Auto Parts, also you can look in Hemmings Motor News, they list a lot of places that sell rebuild kits.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

Why bother trying to repair it..? The NAPA chain has a line of 6 and 12 volt electric fuel pumps - I have one on my Packard Twelve...works fine. Even has a dandy fine filter screen built in.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

Peter, in reply to your question "why bother to repair the fuel pump . . .", I did just purchase one from NAPA ($90). When you have five of these things on five different cars (including one on a '34 Packard 12) and two more laying on the work bench because they don't work, it seems to make sense to me to take the time to repair them. After taking one apart, it seems to be a rather simple repair job. Anyway, thanks for your response even if we don't always see things in the same light.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

I have used those Walbro pumps and had problems with them. I can HIGHLY recommend a 6V pump which is sold by CarQuest and other parts stores. The pump number is E8011. I run them as do several of my friends- I have yet to see one fail! It is a piston type pump- looks like a big gold colored fuel filter, inlet at one end, outlet at the other. Comes with a small fuel filter on the inlet side and two wires coming out of it.
I always use a NAPA fuel pressure regulator with them.
Just a suggestion-
Greg

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

Here is a list of electric fuel pumps I've used/seen and some failure modes.
Walbro/AC/BorgWarner and others. Aluminum can with single threaded terminal on the bottom. 4 screws holding the top half on and 4 screws holding the valve plate to the top. Bellows type pump. This is a interupter style pump so it has a point set and condenser.
Failures: The rubber bellows seem to fail and leak. Also had a condenser short causing the fuel pump fuse to pop( you do have a fuse in your system don't you? close to the powersupply is best). I removed the condenser, pump worked, but it probably won't last very long.
The gold fuel filter type, AC? Round steel fuel filter looking pump with two wires. Piston type with electronic control. These are isolated from ground so they can be used on a positive ground car( + to + )
Failure: No pumping action and leaking fuel from the crimped cover. Central internal brass tube cracked on end causing fuel leak. This was a used pump when I installed it and it went many miles under my care.
Facet, square looks like a transformer in a old TV/ radio. Piston type with electronic control. A very old one I have has one wire while the newer one has two. The two wire unit will work with positive ground as well.
Failure: None so far ( and want to keep it that way)
Facet, round steel tube with 1/2 turn top cap. Wire from the side of the tube with fittings above and below. Popular with the British car guys. Haven't used one of these so no failures.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Rebuild

Ken G Wis.: try some quick disconnect fittings and use only one or two pumps among your 5 or 6 cars. I think the name is Hasbor on the fittings. The are used for racing and R&D applications on brake lines, fule lines etc. Mount the pump in a convienent place and just transfer from one car to the other as needed. Of course this is a bit of a hassle if your driving all 5 or 6 in the same day. I assume it would be a swap every 3 or 4 days at the max.
