| Re: 54 chevy torque tube Help Clean all the gunk / rust from the torque tube starting at the "ball" on the back of the tranny ,and going back towards the rear-end, until the tube swells to maximum diameter - this area is a "slip-joint".
Once you've got all the crud / rust removed, loosen the knurled-ring at the back end of the "torque ball", and squirt the tube with WD-40. Remove the four cap-screws from the retaining ring on the back of the tranny, slide the ring back, then grab the ball and with a twisting motion, slide it back on the torque-tube as far as it will go.
This will expose the u-joint, and you can split it as described in the preceeding post.
