I HAVE A 1948 OLDSMOBILE 98 witha straight 8 (flathead) what are the type of main bearings in it? babit or steel ?

It looks like the engine bearings are steel.

who can u tell? with out opening the motor up.

You cann't tell by looking at the engine. I found out about your Olds by looking in my MOTOR repair manual under rod and main bearing replace.
