Question 1914 Cadillac Rear Differential Axle Fluid

My 1914 Cadillac owners manual says to use "vegetable castor oil" in the rear axle. It goes on to say "The ordinary rear axle lubricant is not suitable for use in this (1914) axle." It also says "Do not use mineral castor oil". This axle does have at least 1 "soft rubber oil retainer" and I have heard that petroleum based oils will damage rubber. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with these 2 speed differentials and or using vegetalbe castor oil in them?

The guy that did this post on his 1914 Cadillac is still around I think. You should ask him.
