Are Your Wiper's like this?

I am ready to replace my windshield wipers and I noticed I will not be curing a curling up problem. When the wipers are shut off, they rest on these pan head style screws that hold a molding on at the bottom of the windshield. I know I can adjust them on the spline, but they look good were they are and the travel looks good also. Is this the norm? Am I missing some sort of cradle that would lift them a bit? Wrong screws? Be adjusted up or down more?

Re: Are Your Wiper's like this?

My driver side wiper hangs-up a bit on the black (Aluminum?) molding at the bottom of the windshield. The molding is off the glass a little bit, on the driver's side.

Re: Are Your Wiper's like this?

I just had my front glass replaced ($2,200, insurance, I thank you). I wondered about the after market wiper blades. I believe there is a lower profile OEM blade. Most gm cars I have seen rest the arms on a bumper that raises the rubber up in a neutral position. there is a bumper on ours and the arm rests a good half inch above the rest position. Also mine wont seat under the hood without scraping it. There is an adjuster in the center of the hood for that.

That's why I've been using GM blades; because they seem to hang-up less on my car, than aftermarkets. It looks like they're still available: 22155381
That's the GM number that I had for 'em.

Re: Are Your Wiper's like this?

I think a few of you are experiencing different issues. My blades are low profile and tuck under the hood just fine. Unfortunately, when off, the actual squeegee part that wipes the glass is left resting on the heads of these screws, and distorting the rubber.

For others, It sounds like somewhere along the line someone changed the whole blade instead of just the rubber squeegee part and you ended up with a fatter blade.

So far, the currant feed back is that the screw issue is the norm.

Re: Are Your Wiper's like this?

I had some michelin blades that wiped fine but did not park correctly because they woud not fit under the hood. The rain-X blades fit under the hood ok, but I could not find just blade refills. I'm now giving the trico teflon blades a try, about $11. each, with 4$ refills@ RA, they seem to fit under the hood ok. They arn't parking fully against the stop but I think that's an arm issue, not a blade issue.

Re: Are Your Wiper's like this?

Good evening,

On my '91 shop manual page 8E-10 "Wiper arm adjustment" a procedure is given to adjust the parked position of the arms. It involves removing the reveal molding, changing the effective length of the transmission drive link. Adjustment is done to both sides to position the blades against the stop in the park position.

My problem was a "stuttering of the driver's side wiper at its leftmost extreme.
I reversed the blade which had acquired a set in its shape and the problem was cured. In my '91 the parking ramp is not high enough to ensure that the blade is lifted from contact with the park area. I did not yet make an adjustment there, but it would make sense to not have the blade rubber rest against a surface thereby eventually taking on a distorted shape.

On reassembling the reveal molding, I redid an attachment hole in order to have the molding touch the glass all over. The manual limits the glass-to-molding gap to < .040".

Regards,
Jack C.
