window switches

We have a local junk yard here that lets you pick your own parts. One dollar to enter and pay as you leave for what you have. I found a riviera, about a 1985 or so. Since most parts are the same as the Reatta I tried to get all I could. Figured I would get the window switch along with some others. The window switch is made into the wireing harness and doesn't unplug. So when you have a switch problem you are in for trouble. I did see that the switch will come apart for cleaning etc but you will have to get the whole harness to replace the switch. At least on the Riviera. The woodgrain dash panels on this car look good on the Reatta with the brown insides.

Re: window switches

Kenny, how do the dash panels come off the Riviera, and how did you attach to the Reatta? Odd that an 85 would fit. What year is your reatta?

Re: window switches

WUFIBUG, I saw some items from the Riv. with 84 man. dates on them. That usually means the car is the next year. That would make it an 85. I really don't know what year the car was. I only knew that most of the parts were or looked the same at the 88 Reatta. The dash panels go in the same way as the Reatta. A few push clips and two screw on the one side. The center just has the push clips. Everything is just like the reatta, really. Neet to have woodgrain dash panels.

Re: window switches

The window switches unplug on the Reattas. All GM's that I have ever seen Including my Reatta have had plugs on the switches. Look close it will unplug.
If I was to guess I would say the window switches were shared with many other 2 door GM cars. The older modles tended to have the crome ones like ours. I seen aftermarket crome 2 window GM switches that may fit on a parts hook at the store.
Tom

Re: window switches

TOM, I did look close. The center consol window switches on this Riviera were part of the wireing harness for the consol. This harness also had a lighter and light for the rear passengers or I would have taken it harness and all. I spent a lot of time getting to this part because the seats didn't move and it was a real chore to get inside. I took the radio that is also in the consol and paid special attention to the switches. They were just the same on the outside that you see in the Reatta. The under side did not have a plug. I REPEAT, it was made into the harness. Next time I will get the whole setup and email you a picture.........

Re: window switches

JFRIESE, YOU ARE GOOD. I took the unit apart. I sure could have used some do this first information. This is not for the beginner. I finally got it down to just the unit itself. All plates off and also the door. Then I pluged it into the car to watch the movement of the system. Yah, you have to hold the door switch closed and also the [tape in] switch closed to see it operate. I figures it was out of any lub. I oiled anything that moved, sparingly. I kept it off of the belt and the drive pins and rollers. I also did this with the one from the Riviera donor car. Now both work fine. Question, There was no point to take it apart any further but what is the next part to remove? I looked and looked and couldn't figure what to take off or apart next to get to the belt. Since everything was working just fine there was no reason to go any further but sometime this will need a belt. Time for lesson #2
