thermostat........
has anyone ever cornered a reatta designer/engineer at one of those reatta meets....and slapped the crap out of him/her???
im replacing all the hoses in the cooling system..and when it came to the thermostat.....im having the same problem as everyone else did on this subject..cocked housing..its not cocked when the o-ring is left out..but heres my question..when i pulled the original(?) t-stat out, it had a rubber o-ring
thing on the top of the t-stat..plus the one that goes on the housing...the
factory service manual says "two new rubber O-rings on the thermostat upper
housing," the cartoon in the manual shows only one....
weird..housing goes in flat with no o-ring and no t-stat, goes in flat with o-ring and no t-stat but crooked when all together..how the feck did the factory get it to go on flat..??
see what time im posting this????

Re: thermostat........
I hope someone clarifies:
I have replaced several Thermos in 89's and seem to remember only ONE "O" ring?
Don't know about 90?
91 has different housing and split O ring.
Reatta Brakes, Teves, except 1991, are excellent but somewhat complicated.

Re: thermostat........
a) seal is via the O-ring, bolt is just to hold in place, tightening is not needed. Good cleaning of manifold is imperative.
b) I use a large screwdriver to pust down the non bolt side while tightening the bolt & do not tighten very far.
c) A little tilt does not hurt anything
d) Second rubber seal was the subject of a TSB - to increase seal around t'stat if car did not warm up quickly.
e) 88 FSM also shows t'stat installed upside down. Pointy end ("to radiator") goes up.

Re: thermostat........
i might have a 3/16" gap on the non-bolt side.. the screw driver
thing didnt work for me..ill get if fired up one of these days,
and hope it dosnt leak..i bet the factory had it installed with some kind of press...

Re: thermostat........
The 1st. one I changed in an 89 had only 1 O ring. If you remove hose at housing, put thermo in correctly w/ O ring, level, hold level w/ long, big screwdriver, tighten. Won't leak as Padget said. 2nd. O ring not necessary(one on top or under thermo flange, can't remember exactly where it went)
Be careful of damaging TPS, easy to damage!
