Shifter Illumination Panel Repair Tutorial

Our buddy, Daves89 has written a great tutorial on repairing the Shifter Illumination Panel. He has included a lot of photos to help explain how he did the repairs. He wanted the tutorial posted here but this forum will not allow all the photos, that needed to go with it, for a good explanation of what has to be done. (Sorry Dave)

The tutorial can be found here.

Thanks Ronnie! Now the world knows how much I depend on your help. [I am so computer illiterate}.
Only one correction. The LED package cost is $17.99 not $.99. Well worth doing.
The only thing different is that you do not have the gear you are in indicator light ring. The light is bright enough that if your mirror/window switch does not illuminate [like mine] you now can see them in the dark.
If anyone is interested, I would do the "upgrade" for you [at a cost].

Whoa, these cars have a 110V system in them? Any idea as to the amperage?

No idea to the amperage, but yes you do have 110v in the car. They would be all the backlighting. Shifter, wiper pod, headlight pod, mirror and wiper swirches.

Re: Shifter Illumination Panel Repair Tutorial

The lights are 12 volts according to the package. (see photo) Do they also work with a 110 volts, or is the voltage going to them actually 12 volts?

BTW, I forgot to re-size the photos in the tutorial so it was loading real slow. I have corrected it now. I apologize to those folks who have a dial-up connection.

The LED strips are 12 volts.
That is why you can either plug into your cigarette lighter or hardwire into the fuse box.
The original car backlights are 110 volts. You cannot wire the LED strips into the original shifter cable.

Dave, that needs to be clearly stated in the tutorial. Please give clear instructions on how to wire the lights and I will add it to your tutorial and give a warning not to use the 110 volt circuit to power the new lights.

Re: Shifter Illumination Panel Repair Tutorial

My own backlights don't work, so I think I'll test the 110V supply and see what it draws unless someone has it written down somewhere. There's a few things I can think of that having 110 in the car would make easier.

But, this might be better in a new thread rather than the hijacking I committed here.
