Rear Speaker Replacement
instead of posting again on a old thread: Replacement Speakers - which some folks apparently don't like being done
, i thought i'd start a new thread.
i picked up the Metra 72-4500 speaker harnesses, and being on a "low budget", went to walmart with my blown speaker. i found a pair of Scosche 6 1/2" model# HD6503 4 ohm 50W/250W max, that the screw holes lined up perfectly. installed it and sounds much better than the factory equipped left side that is fine!
will probably put the other speaker in the left side in tomorrow - if i can deal with the heat and humidity again...
i know these are probably not anywhere close to the infinity-kappas or others, but with some tweaking of the graphic equalizer, i've got good bass levels, and the original tweeter is still working as well. all less than $40.
no doubt i'll upgrade as finances allow, but next will be the rivets (or screws?) to get the driver's side window operational - i'm thinking i may have to "farm" that one out.

Re: Rear Speaker Replacement
I'd say you did well there. While the Infinity's are great speakers, they come at a price. The factory amp is still a weak link, but depending on your needs it may be perfectly adequate. Adding an outboard amp (and doing it right) is not the easiest thing to do on these cars.

Actually it is better to stick with the original thread, assuming it is a fairly recent one. The weird threads are when someone revives one from 10+ years ago from the dead.

If you find the sound from the rear is too bright, you may want to disconnect the original tweeters.
Some like to tune their systems so that they emphasize the front "sound stage", and just use the rear speakers for "fill". (After all, how many folks sit in a concert with their backs to the stage?) In that case, tweeters in the rear are de-emphasized or eliminated altogether in favor of emphasizing the bass. I think that is why the 90-91 systems used 10 ohm speakers with whizzer cones back there. Probably shaved a few bux in costs as well.

ok. the thread was "only" 8 years old...
i also need to replace the front speakers but waiting to do that when i tackle the driver's side window rivets. then i'll balance everything out. or maybe upgrade - i've got a 600W powered sub-woofer and a 400W amp sitting in a storage box (with some high powered 6X9's and 5X7's) that i was going to put in my '80 Corvette, but never got "a-round-tuit" before i sold her.
