Anyone have any experience with the below type of power chip???? Wondering if it will be worth the $ by using just the chip itself and not combining with other modifications.

Re: Power or speed chip question....

In the words of BB "What a maroon".

The limiting factors of the 3800 "C" engine are mechanical: intake, cam, exhaust.
No electronics are going to help with those. Mostly PROM chips bump the advance curve
(why they require premium which has no more power than 87) and degrade the knock retard sensitivity. A bad engine may "feel" better temporarily.

My PROM is improved but did not touch mixture or advance maps and 0-60 is 8.4-8.5 seconds
(G-Tech Pro) mainly because everything is "right" (have replaced the Magnavox ignition with a Delco).

"Chips" can do some things and can mask others but not in this particular combination.

Looking closely this does not even say it is a PROM but rather a "module" so
I do not know what it is but the words are long on words and short on specifics.
Wonder if their graphs have any numbers

Some chips do modify the auto tranny shifting points, but would only on a '91 Reatta because all others had hydraulic transmissions without really any electronic control. Though I guess a few late '90s had the electronic tranny too.

Re: Power or speed chip question....

By itself, it will make a marginal improvement, but the downside is premium fuel is required. The stock chip seems pretty well matched to the stock system running on 87 octane. You may even see a degree or two of knock retard at the shift points with the stock system meaning it is close to the maximum performace for the system (a good thing). With premium fuel, I found you must dial in a fairly large increase in ignition timing lead to restore the stock type of "snappiness" in the throttle response. A more useful change in the chip, even for the non-electronic transaxle, is to lower the cooling fan program to match a lower temp. thermostat and eliminate the TCC lockup completely in third gear, and raise the 4th gear TCC to 55 mph or so. In the type of driving I do, I find this helps engine response buy keeping the rev's a little higher in semi-urban driving without really hurting the highway cruise manners. Even with all the fooling I have done to my system, running way cool at 165*F, 30# injectors and the turbo, I still see 25-26 mpg in my daily 70 mile commute. The JET reference to a PCM is for later model cars that have discrete ECM-BCM of our cars integrated into a single Powertrain Control Module.

Thanks for the input gentlemen....educational and appreciated. My curiousity is satisfied and better judgement wins with the word "stock" .

I think that you have to look at the bottleneck in the intake air horn and the exhaust manifold casting that padgett has posted a photo of. The engine is an air pump and if you have the intake choked off and the exhaust manifold choked off no electronic chip in the world is going to help. Go back to the basics. Fix the intake and then fix the exhaust. Just my 2cts.
