I use Outlook Express and between 5 pm yesterday and when I looked this am, it had eliminated all my emails between 5/24/11 and 11/24/10.

This has happened before, and I do keep too many emails in my inbox, but why does it take the most recent ones?

Is there a setting I can change?

I have one buddy that wants me to change to some other provider, but when it comes to computers, I am all thumbs and I freeze at the keyboard. I don't want to change.

Any suggestions?

Barney,I tried to Google your problem and got many ideas as to what could be your issue.Didn't look through them all, but you may want to try a search.Thought I could go into my Outlook Express program,but I don't have it on my work computer to check for applicable rules,etc.I will check back to the forum after work and look on my home machine as I have OE there.I'll also check with my IT guys in the office to try and get an answer.Another suggestion would be for you to set up a Gmail account in google to which you could send any or all your email to.That way you wouldn't be using storage on your machine and could access your e mail anywhere you can get on the internet,unlike only using OE at home.Gmail has a TON of storage and you are likely never going to run out of space using their site.They also have a neat Archive function where you can also save old mail.It is very simple to set up a gmail account.Just go to Google and click on Gmail and follow through to set up your own e mail account.I would suggest that before you do, have several e mail addresses picked out for yourself because someone else may have your 1st choice.I'll check back later to see how you have progressed ,and if anyone else has given the right answer.

It could have archived your emails into a folder. Check those folders, it probably made a new one or used an existing one maybe called "Archived Items".

Good call on the G-Mail account. I only use Outlook/Outlook Express at work, but the gmail account is awesome and my main email, accessable from any computer online, tons of space, allows bigger attachments, secure & very easy to use. Go for it.

I looked under the folders that I have created to see if Outlook created a history or other file and didn't see anything there.

Where (or under what program) would Outlook store or create such a file?

Hopefully you had OE set up to mirror your online folders on your hard drive. There would be a list of mail folders on the left side of your screen under the email account you set up.

Then when you logged on to you account, OE would synchronize the online folders with the same folders on your hard drive.

Search your computer's hard drive for files with the extension (*.pst) including your recycle bin, and see what shows up.

Hopefully the missing mail is either still on your hard drive or on your mail server's site and can be recovered.

You should call the tech service for you email (internet) provider and ask them for assistance in your situation. They would know if they purged your online folders, and should be able to assist you with getting OE to do what you want.

Outlook folders would only be with Outlook. Outlook Express folders would only be with Outlook Express. Sorry I could not help further.

G Mail just let me down, so be careful. My e mail account was compromised, according to Google. They closed it until I could provide them with adequate security info. Well that is next to impossible and now the account is permanently closed, after a review by them ( Google ). Oh well.

I've used gmail for about 3 years now. Never had a problem. I send and receive a lot of email, and I've only filled up about 35% of my storage space. I've found that gmail is the way to go. You can connect your other email accounts to it too if you wish. You can access it from anywhere, and it doesn't take up space on your computer. And best of all, it's free!

I use Eudora & have for years. I always download from the server and store on my computer, have over a decade of archives. If you leave on the server they probably have rules for archiving or deletion.

Barney,sorry to say I looked all through Outlook Express and couldn't find the answer to your specific problem.When I got back to the office from the field this Pm all the "geeks" were gone.I'll try to get with them Friday to pick their brains.Rich

The problem with gmail, yahoo mail and hotmail is the fact that they are free. They are the email accounts of choice for spammers. More and more websites that require you to sign up for access are rejecting the free email accounts because they assume you are a spammer wanting take advantage of their website to sell Viagra or whatever. Just today I tried to sign up for a heathcare forum with my hotmail account (that I use when I don't want to give out my main email address) and was politely told to go away or use a different email address.

One option is to use a better email client that has the features you want. I use PIM (Personal Information Manager) called Intellect by Chaos software and have never had a problem. I've used Outlook 2000, Outlook Express and a lot of other email clients. I like Intellect the best of them all.

Barney - I you sure those e-mails were eliminated OR...do they just not appear? In Outlook (I know you use Outlook Express), there was a bug that would make e-mails/folder 'disappear'. To make them 're-appear', you either had to verify your OE file (there's a menu option) - usually the file was corrupt but repairable. Or just re-boot the computer and when you open Outlook, the file would first be verified (which is what I did with success).

OE is designed to be no larger then 2GB. I think Outlook can be as large as 32 GB. Over 32GB and I think it will automatically start archiving files older then one year. And...off-site back up is inexpensive - worth looking into.

Ditch outlook and use Thunderbird: Thunderbird - It?s All Yours. (Admittedly, I am a biased linux user. So outlook isn't an option in the first place.)

One issue with gmail is that google mines your email to 'improve your internet experience'. And provide marketing data to their customers. Other 'free' sites do the same. Not to mention all the obnoxious ads that a lot of them put up.

I totally agree with Padgett and wws 944 especially for you, Barney, and then nothing goes away unless you want it to go away.
My wife uses Eudora and I did up until about two years ago. I still would but I switched to Thunderbird ,Firefox and Ubuntu.
I have every Reatta related email I have sent saved all the way back to 8/3/2000 and I have most received emails saved. Sometimes I go through my inbox and delete most but not all emails from the same person.
Because everything is saved on my computer I also have many folders I can go to and copy and paste informational material on how to fix Reatta problems without typing it out anew.
As an example, I just looked, and on 1/26/2001 you emailed me looking for recoverable steering wheels.

Yay! I have a couple of computers running ubuntu, including the one I am typing this on. Am very happy with it.

BTW Eudora 8 is a Eudora front end layered on Thunderbird. Best of both worlds and now open source.
