I have a 89 coupe, 80000 hiway miles, serviced regularly. Yesterday while driving I heard a LOUD bang (thote I'd blown a tire) and then the front end (I think) locked up leaving lots of rubber on the hiway. The car was towed to dealership. I haven't heard anything yet. Any suggestions: tranny or ABS. Thank you.

Good question for "The weakest link"<BR>Did both front tires leave black marks?<P>If only one wheel locked, I would guess a CV joint let go. If both locked, it may be in the transmission. <P>Did the incident kill the engine?

Thank you for replying! One skid mark, right front tire (I think!). The engine was still running. In fact the sheriff backed the car down the highway Every time he touched the brakes even in reverse the car would immediately stop (but not the engine). Couldn't get it to move forward but a couple inches. Some of the guys that helped found a big bolt about 1/2 inch long from under the car.
