Headlight CLOSING question.

Just got it so....my headlights "slam" when shutting off ( ya know; gravitational pull). Is this "normal"?

Re: Headlight CLOSING question.

My headlights open fast and close fast, it's been that way for the 122,000 miles I've owned the car.

Re: Headlight CLOSING question.

If your headlights sre slamming shut, you are probably not far from mechanical failure.
There is an arm attached to the motor shaft which moves the headlight assembly. When the flats on these arms open-up, this allows free motion. When there is free motion, you will hear the slamming sound. When the flats are rounded-out enough that they no longer lock-up, your headlights will fail to open.

Re: Headlight CLOSING question.

I had the "slam shut" problem with which I lived until I noted that the headlights also would not stay up. When I went to adjust the stop, I found the plastic parts broken *and* that the arms were loose. I tightened them up [forget what screw where right now] and lubricated all, and I appear to OK for a while. I am confident I will be rebuilding before very long and probably should be stockpiling the arms now.

Re: Headlight CLOSING question.

This internet page describes the headlight door problems and how to fix them
http://www.reatta.net/headlight_repair.html
The door slamming shut sounds like the bellcrank hole is worn. The hole has one flat side. Eventually if not fixed the doors wont even open.
