FYI trunk water leak****Update 11-16...need help please

Over the last year I have had wet mats on the left rear floor of the trunk (right under the brake module). Figured I maybe had the trunk cracked when washing and dried it several times. Noticed it again today and pulled everything out and I really think it is coming in only when driving in the rain through the seam in the wheel well. Anyway, I re sealed the factory seal with gutter seal caulk...keeping my fingers crossed. There was a rusty carpet retaining tab under the carpet right at the factory seal where the most moisture was....

***UPDATE:
Getting drenched big time today form storms from N.C. so I thought I would check my proudly "repaired" trunk seam water leak <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Not Resolved at all....

Since it was raining I placed paper towels all over the affected area and discovered the leak coming from above the seam....the gas tank filler neck. Has anyone removed one of these....I looked in the parts manual and do not see a seal or gasket...need suggestions please????

thanks,

Nic

Re: FYI trunk water leak

Is this for the coupe rather than the rag top?
If so and I can't recall if has a sunroof .... if so the drain may have pulled out and has to be reconnected.

Does this help???

Re: FYI trunk water leak

Hey Robert,,

WISH it had a hole in the roof but no....

I am used to leaking sunroofs - the drain deal...had an Olds Cutlass International (neat ride), and a Cutlass FE3 both with leaking s/roof drains.

Looking back and especially this time, every time I have had wet carpet in the trunk it was just after a storm/rain, and we just had two days of rain last week. The wet carpet starts just below where the brake brain is located, and soaks the carpet traveling rearward....leaving the rear glass as not a likely suspect. Trunk weatherstrip is in good shape, and the deck lid hinge weld is sound....I had also water checked the rear glass, deck lid, and tail light previously with a hose and netted 0 negative results. The rusty carpet cleat right below the brake brain is a dead giveaway I think.

Just another problem I guess <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> ....sometimes I think I am an owner of a 1960's era British <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> automobile <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Just thinking >>>>> If I did not perform the majority of the repair work myself, and I had to pay normal retail shop labor and parts, I would not be able to afford this little car. Sorry about the complaining <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I won't know until I drive in the rain again but I am certainly keeping my fingers crossed <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Since it was raining I decided to and placed paper towels all over the affected area in the trunk and did some agressive driving in the rain ....... **Discovered the leak coming from above the seam....the *gas tank filler neck*. Has anyone removed one of these....I looked in the parts manual and do not see a seal or gasket...need suggestions please????

P.S. The black shroud was removed by the body shop when the car was painted I am sure......

Re: FYI trunk water leak

Nic,

Go back to the body shop and inform them of this problem - which cropped-up only since the new paint was done.

They may have neglected a small detail, (sealant around filler neck cup), and would probably remedy the problem for such a good customer. Seeing the high-quality of paint job you got, I'm sure this was an oversight they'll be happy to resolve.

'Till then, drive between the raindrops!!
