    Engine oil leaks

    I am sealing eveything on my coupe engine that I can. I remember reading a post concerning or having included mention of some item on the bottom side of the engine that few folks thought of sealing or whatever....maybe some item around the oil filter? Can someone shed some light please?

    Thanks,

    Nic

    Re: Engine oil leaks

    Nic,
    In my experience the common leak points are;
    Valve Pan gaskets,
    Oil Pan gasket,
    Front and rear main seals. and lastly
    Tranny output seals (where the drive axles plug in.
    Trouble with any leak that get's oil or tranny fluid down around the base of the engine, air turbulance while driving is going to swirl it all over the place.
    I've done this several times, pick up several cans of the good quality degreaser, get your car up on your ramps and spray liberally from the top and from the bottom. Then flush with the water hose. Let it dry completely and then go for a short spin and at least get to operating temp. Then back on the ramps to see where the fresh fluid is coming from.
    I suspect if you've got wetness around the Oil Filter (other then a loose oil filter) it's either the Oil Pan or the front main seal.

    Another possibility is the oil filter adapter gasket.

    Re: Engine oil leaks

    Thanks Greg and Ronnie for the replies.

    Finished (not totally as going to seal the front of the engine and engie/tranny pans also) replacing the intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets the other night. Going to replace the front cover gaskets / seals, and replace the water pump Monday-Tuesday nights. I think Ronnie mentioned the item (oil filter adapter gasket) I was thinking about, and I didn't know about the "tranny output seals". A year or so ago a friend had used dye to point out a lot of the seepage, and at that time the rear c/seal was not an issue-hope it still is Not. After I finish the above and finish replacing the engine and tranny pan gaskets (Items I know need replaceing), I will clean everything very well and ckeck for seepage as Greg suggests above. Question please - Is the front main (or is it a crank seal) seal easily replacable please?

    Thanks for the replies....provided what I need I believe
