dash blackout 90 reatta HELP!!!!!!!
I just used a jumper to check the code and I get 47 which doesn't exist according to the link i have Reatta Data Page
Does anyone know what it is? I get an error message on my dash with no display of gauges other than electrical problem and service engine and 00 speedometer. I tried both keys as suggested in other discussions. when I use the jumper to check the codes i get repeated 47...? I have no idea how much gas I have, engine temp, miles or speed im going etc...

Re: dash blackout 90 reatta HELP!!!!!!!
Code E047 is BCM-ECM data link. That is for an '88 model anyway.

Is the cover marked "Do Not Remove" over the ALDL by the e-brake in place ? It has a jumper that completes the LAN loop.

That brings to mind a fellow who had a bad back... He bent over to take a load of clothes out of the dryer and his bad back was cured.

Re: dash blackout 90 reatta HELP!!!!!!!
My cure for this ailement is a replacement IPC. Sorry. '90-93 Riviera's have the same panel.

Re: dash blackout 90 reatta HELP!!!!!!!
Seems that most such failures are internal to the IPC, not a loose wiring/poor connection issue. That said, there seem to have been a number of posts here in the past couple of years where cleaning and re-seating the connectors has effected at least temporary cure of the dreaded IPC blackout.
This actually worries me as it does not inspire confidence in the quality of the harnesses and connection points. If this becomes a more wide spread issue within the car, the electrical gremlins will multiply to the point of causing infuriation for the troubleshooter.
While these cars are all 20 years old or nearly so, the integrity of the wiring and connectors should not be much of an issue unless the car was either flooded, wrecked badly or modified where wiring was chopped and spliced. The one exception is under the hood where heat does take it's toll on connector housings and the like.
Maybe I am worrying for nothing, but intermittent harness failures with no apparent cause (except perhaps age) make me nervous as to the reliability of the vehicle.

Re: dash blackout 90 reatta HELP!!!!!!!
Kevin, while I understand your concern, I must state that the IPC for the 90/91 Reatta [and the 90-93 Riv] is a known weak link in the car. That spraying of the connection is a temporary fix for a soon to fail IPC. That is why I have stopped selling the 90/91 IPC. I had too many failures shortly after selling them. [For that reason I also don't sell the touchscreen for the 88/89].
I have found that 99% of the time it is not the wire or the connection [exception as you said anything under the hood, due to corrosion caused by weather and engine temperature], but either the ECM,BCM or the end item, IPC,Touchscreen, Temperature Control Module, etc. Exception noted as you stated, a butchering of the wiring by a previous owner.
I still enjoy these cars and use them for business as daily drivers and have no fear driving them all distances in all weather conditions.
