I did this about a year ago actually. It all started when my friend had some different aluminum intake pipe pieces purchased from Ebay and he gave me one with this simple bend in it. Off with the factory setup and then I began mocking up the pipe, cut it to fit, then drilled a hole for the intake air temp sensor (IAT) and painted the pipe with some two-stage silver I had. I used a PCV grommet from Advance Auto Parts for a couple bucks that the IAT fit into and then went to the local hardware store to find the rubber coupler because the throttle body is 3 1/2'' or so (don't quite remember) and the intake pipe was about 3''. Then I went to
www.KNFilters.com and went through all of their custom fit filters to find the one that would work the best. It's a oval-cone shaped one and instead of the end being capped with their usual chrome cap, I got one with the "Xtreme" top so air could enter through the front.
Overall, I can't say I've really gained anything as far as fuel economy because my driving varies all the time and of course, I really didn't feel any increase in power (I don't think anybody can feel a few horsepower difference) but you can certainly hear the intake a lot louder now...and thats not a bad thing either because it's only at wide open or close to it when you really hear it. I also added in a picture of my painted intake, valvecovers, fuel rail cover, etc. Painted again with GM Ultra Silver over two years ago and still holding up, what do you think? Thanks
