Anti-Lock Brake System

Severl weeks ago, I asked the site about the ABS problem I was having. A lot of great info was provided to me. I will still rely on this and similar sites that provide info from many of the same individuals. The red brake light was on as well as the yellow ABS. I was advised to have the accumulator checked as a start. Problem was, I am not as mechanically inclined as I felt I needed to be to tackle this, so I shared all of the info with a local mechanic (referred to me...). I found that the guy removed the entire ABS from the car...!!! Make a long story short, I opted to get an ABS from a used Reatta. The part came from basiccarparts.com. They got it to me quickly and the brakes work fine. I kept the old ABS in case I need any part of it. WILL NOT return to this mechanic for anything though...

Re: Anti-Lock Brake System

It is not uncommon for a mechanic to have problems with the Teves brakes. They were short lived, something like 1986-1990, then Teves redsigned them and there was compitition from other companies. Even if you find a mechanic that worked on them back when they were new, we are now dealing with age problems, something that a new system would not have.

There is a reasonable amount of knowledge on this site to help with Teves problems.

You made a good move in keeping the old unit.

I suggest any 1988-1990 Reatta owner do a brake test every 6 months to check the system.
Go to Reatta Data Page and read the brake test.

Thanks Barney...

Yeah, keeping the old one really was a no-brainer. My next move is to get the headlamp motors replaced, the passenger side window checked. I also have contacted Jim Finn to acquire one of his CRT's. He makes a good offer...

Re: Anti-Lock Brake System

My wife loves her 88 Reatta but I can not get brakes to work. It is intermittent. Did diagnostic check as one member suggested and it indicates nothing is wrong. Put in new relays. Worked for a few drives. Then light goes on and brakes go to the floor. Right now I have car parked in garage. Any one out there have any other ideas or is this a lost cause? Thanks in advance.

Re: Anti-Lock Brake System

Yes, instrument each point between power and the motor (relay, switch etc). Use a light bulb at each point and arrange in a row. When it fails see which are lit and which are not.

OTOH you said the pedal goes to the floor. That sounds like either air in the system (unlikely if sometimes) or bad seals in the master cylinder.

In any event you need to troubleshoot the boost circuit and not the ABS. Yellow light is just coming on because the red is.

Cedrider! I just destroyed one of my wheel speed sensors while doing one of the impossible ball joints. Do you happen to have one?

Re: Anti-Lock Brake System

Cedrider - I note you mention replacing the headlamp motors. The motors get blamed for a lot of prolbems with the headlamps but rarely are they themselves the problem. More likely the roller bushings in the gearcase have deteriorated and/or the crank arm has rounded out. If the manual knob turns when the light switch comes on then then the motor isn't the problem. This is just a basic response and do not wish to contradict your decision. Both Mr. Eaton and I have remedies for the two problems I mentioned.
