Will '82 road wheels fit a '68?

Will the chrome 14" Buick rally wheels "road wheels" from a 1982 Regal fit a '68 Skylark with drum brakes? I have a chance to pick up a set for $40 and hate to pass them up.

Re: Will '82 road wheels fit a '68?

I've got three '82 and one '78 road wheels on my drum brake '65 and they fit fine. The later wheels have a bit more offset than the stock '65 wheels (about an inch) but they look nice that way. Make sure when you buy the set that you check each wheel's offset is the same, as there are 4" and 4.5" offset wheels out there. Ahem... "....how'd he know that" you ask... My first clue was that the car pulled right all the time (wide wheel side), despite correct alignment. My only excuse is a woman owned the car before me...she had the wheels put on.... along with the Hankook radials. Sheesh.
Another little trivia piece is that the center openings on early wheels are 2" and later wheels are 2.125" (2 1/8) so the early caps won't fit tight and they rattle. That can be fixed by placing a length of 14 to 18 (gotta experiment here) gauge insulated wire around cap on the outside of the clips to hold tension on the clips. If the caps rattle too long, they'll come apart and scatter bits on the road... again, "how'd he know that?" Too long was about 35 miles.
An advantage to the later wheels is that they will readily accept a disc brake conversion. Four for $40 isn't bad, if the chrome's good. An afternoon of polish and paint, and they'll look really great... mine does with fat ole Michelin 215/75Rs on it.
Cheers,
JMC
[ 08-27-2001: Message edited by: John Chapman ]

Thanks for the info John. I will be looking at the wheels today and buying them if they are in good shape.
[ 08-28-2001: Message edited by: caGSxlr8 ]
