What year is this Buick?

I know it's a '51 or '52 but how can I tell which? Any other info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chopper

I's a'51. The bumper guards on either side of the front license plate extend down and cover the bumper bolt heads on a '52. Also, the trunk lid is square, while the '51's is more rounded.

If I remember correctly, the number of vertical bars in the grill changed as well, although I can't find a source at the moment to verify.

It doesn't apply to Specials, but Supers and Roadmasters got chrome tail fins in 1952.

A trick my dad taught me is to look closely at the tail light lenses. You will see a string of numbers and letters. The 2 digit year is always in those numbers. I have found this works for almost any GM car.

This is the SAE certification number for the lens. The year in the number series is the year of certification. For lenses used only one year on one car this method works fine. However lenses have been known to be reused in subsequent/later years, and the numbers do not change in those cases.

A commonly mis-identified example are the lenses used on 1959 Edsels, which were 1958 Lincoln units that were re-used. Many European cars used the same lenses for years, for instance a 1979 MG Midget tailight lens was certified (and dated) in 1961.

In this case Buick used the same 2 lenses from 1950 to 1952; one for all 1950 cars & the 51/52 big cars, and a second for 1951/52 Specials. One would be dated 1950, the other 1951 regardless of the car it's found on.

Re: What year is this Buick?

The easiest way to tell a 1951 from a 1952 Buick, is that the 1952s all had little chrome fins on top of the rear fenders--only one or two inches tall, and about 3 feet long. The 1951s have no chrome on top of the rear fenders at all.

The number and thickness of the grille bars also changed, as noted, but it is very hard to tell which grille is which, unless you see both years together.

Re: What year is this Buick?

Is the 51 the same chassis as the 54 and would a nailhead fit where the straight eight is now as a bolt-in with trans?
The engine in the car has been apart for 45 yrs and I know of a good running '54 nailhead with tranny...also a 455 Buick/400.
I want it to appear original, and I don't want to cut anything (on this one )
Thanks
Pat
