1937 Buick

Hello Everyone...
I'm pretty new to this whole scene, and was hoping for some help. Can someone help me figure out some stats on a Buick I'm working on...

Here are the stats from the little plate in the engine compartment...
Details:
1937 Buick
Series 91
Style: 37-4919
Body: 478
Trim: 324
Paint: 504
It also has a big B in the lower right hand side.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1937 Buick

You have a very large very rare Model 91 Buick Limited a big six passenger four door sedan. According to a book I have, there were only 1229 of these built. Overall, there were about 3000 Buick Limiteds built that year, including 7 pasenger limos and other models. This compares to maybe 250,000 total Buick production in 1937.

The original color 504 is Sudan Blue Poly, a relatively dark blue metallic. I don't know about the trim code, most of these cars had brown interiors using bedford cord for the seats and broadcloth (felt like material) for the doors. I have seen some with gray interiors too, I am not sure what offerings there were originally.

I restored a 39 Model 90 and loved it, but these cars can be difficult to restore. Parts unique to the 90 series (such as most of the sheet metal, running boards, and interior items) are very hard to find. Fortunately, many items are shared with the smaller Buicks. The '37 is a very attractive car.

Unfortunately, rarity does not always translate into value. Smaller coupes, convertibles and convertible sedans of the same year are generally worth much more. But all Buick Limiteds are unusual and worth collecting in my opinion.

Re: 1937 Buick

Thanks for info Bill.

As for restoring, I'm not too worried about it. My fiancee's grandfather was the orginal owner of the car. It was then given to her father who has sinced passed. I'm hoping to get it running in time for our wedding in June.

It has been garaged basically its entire life. Still has the orginal interior (gray) and the original paint (dark blue). I do have one other question. There are 2 extra large trippe lights down connected to the bumper. There are no wires leading to them. Do you think they came with the car or were added by someone down the line? I think I might leave them there even if they aren't original because I like the look that they add.

Thanks for the help...

Re: 1937 Buick

Trippe lights were a very common aftermarket accessory of the period. They were probably popular because the bulb type headlamps back then were not the best.

I don't think Buick offered them originally. That wiring could have been disconnected or deteriorated over the years. Trippes are probably worth a few dollars, I used to see them at swap meets years back for quite a bit. I sure wouldn't throw them away! They definitely spruce up the front end of these cars, particularly an elegant large car like a Limited.

I used my 39 90 series in a couple of weddings, there was no problem fitting bride, groom and a couple of others in it! Mine had jump seats, though.

Enjoy the wedding and the car..

Bill.
