I've bead blasted and repainted my Air Cleaner and now need to attach the new aluminum 10" Wildcat 445 round label. It did not come with any type of adhesive or adhesive backing to my surprise. What have you guys used to attach it to the air cleaner lid?

Here's a pic of my restored air cleaner. Stupid flash on the camera shows the surface dust. It looks way better in person.

...and, yes, I did search the forum, and found the thread about the stuck '64 glovebox. Unfortunately, the solutions outlined there (so far) aren't working. It should be noted that, in my case, the key that operates every other lock in my car does not appear to operate the glovebox, so I'm not sure if that's supposed to happen. Second, the lid, as you'll see in the photo, is slightly open, but trying to pry it open with a screwdriver doesn't seem to be working (and I'd rather not break anything--yet). I have sprayed the latch and the button (in and around the lock) with WD40. I'm wondering if I need to somehow nudge the lid left, right, up, or down to somehow work it free, and am hoping someone who's gotten a good look at the mechanism might be able to provide some guidance; I don't have the skills to get at it from the other side on my own.

Hello, I recently purchased a 1963 Riviera Project, and I just wanted to introduce myself. While I am not new to the project car world, this is my first Buick. I have only had the car a few hours now and already have run into something that I thought I should ask about. There is a button to the right of the HighBeam toggle button, just behind the brake pedal, and I have no Idea what I goes to, or what it does. My father thinks it is a push-button start, but I am not sure.

I own a 65 Riviera and yesterday a small hard rubber bumper fell off the inside front edge of the drivers door. The bumper appears to screw in from inside the door with two small screws and hits up against the door jamb light switch when the door closes. Unfortunately, now that it has broken and fallen off, none of the interior lights turn off when I close the door. I unplugged the door jamb switch for now to keep the lights off but does anyone know where I can find that small rubber bumper?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Gents,

All of a sudden I'm getting a rash of technical questions that I don't feel fully qualified to answer, so here's another one I need to confirm.

Yesterday I got an email from an ROA member in SC. He was asking me if he could remove a 3.23 rear end from a '65 and install it in his '63 to replace the 2.78 the '63 now has.

I told him that I thought it was possible but he'd first have to remove the u-joint on the pinion shaft on the '63 and use it to replace the bolt flange on the '65's pinion shaft. Are there any differences in the number of splines on the axles or anything else that would prevent him from making this swap? If my assumption is correct, I'd appreciate a confirmation so I can email him back that it's been confirmed. If it's not correct, let me know that as well. Thanks,

Ed

PS - If he can do it, watch out for him if you see him at a stop light. He's running a 700-R4 behind his nailhead. With the steep 3.06 first gear in the trans and a 3.23 rear end, he'll have a real stump puller going for him. Those are better acceleration gear ratios than a Muncie M-22 four speed and a 4.11 rear end.

Trying to get ready for Lexington...

I completely went through the brakes last year (machined the drums, replaced the following: shoes, springs, wheel cylinders, soft hoses, stainless hard lines, master, rebuilt the booster), but the front right brake just never adjusted or seated right. I've put about 400-500 miles on it hoping that would wear them in.

The problem is that when lightly pressing on the pedal (parking lot maneuvers or low speed stuff) I hear the front right give the normal engaging noises but then keeps repeating them like some have described as an out-of-round condition. About the only way I can think of it, is that the primary shoe starts to make contact then doesn't complete, and it repeats with the spin of the wheel. Just like it needs an adjustment.

I took it to a local olde-time garage just after doing the work, and the owner said I had them adjusted almost right, and finished it for me. he told me to drive it a few miles to wear the corners off. He is also the one who machined the drums for me.

Since then I've put 400-500 miles on and manually adjusted the star gear several times, to the point where it is tighter than the left, so it pulls a little right when breaking hard.

Under harder braking, they work just fine (other than a slight pull).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Greetings-
Can anyone suggest a fair asking price for my '71 Rivi? The engine was overhauled 10,000 miles ago, I have all papers, it runs well. Body is straight, never wrecked, all stock. Otherwise it's a worn puppy. It needs (copper mist) paint and minor spots of body and rust repair, needs (white) vinyl top, bumpers have small dents, interior worn, crack in front windshield. Transmission seal has leaked for last ten years. On-line estimates from Hagarty and NADA ranged from $19k for restored premo Rivs to around $5k for the lowest category for my area, So. Cal. Am selling because I am moving.
What would be a fair price? Thanks in advance,
Best,

A friend of mine wanted to put some miles on his '65 Gran Sport before the trip Lexington in June so he drove it over last night to show me some of the things he's done over the last year. He wanted me to drive it because he's become used to it and wanted someone unfamiliar with it tell him how it drove. Everything worked great except for one thing. When the brakes are applied there's a pull to the left. It's a gentle pull if you apply the brakes gently, but it's a sharp pull if you hit the brakes quick and hard. Once the brakes are set and the car is straightened out, there is no brake pull; the car stops straight with no pull.

The owner is thinking shoes/drums. I'm more inclined to think it's a bad bushing somewhere. What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
is some one out there who can help me with this question?

last week my car ('71 Riviera) had it's annual inspection. The (new) mechanic noticed that all four tie rod ends could be sqeezed about 1 mm. Now he is wondering whether there is a spring inside of them or are they worn...
I have tis car for over 12 years now, and no mechanic ever noticed this.

The shop manual says nothing about it.

OK Riviera People: I recently inquired on a set of Buick rally wheels mounted on tires. The add was on Craig's List. So what's so bad about that? These came off a 76 Riv he was parting. According to the man's description the car wasn't that bad. It was taken out of minimal daily service because of a blown head gasket and I guess age and being a bit tattered.

Guess where it was going? Yup, the Derby! This guy was a Derby person and had been stockpiling 74, 75 and 76 Rivieras for his demo future. he said that these particular models had become favorites of the derby crowd. I cringed for a minute and shook my head, remembered when it was a treat to have them on my car lot (great sellers) and said i'd hook up with him later in the week for the wheels.
I will not be taking a lot of the cardboard due to size. I will not ship this due to the size, so please let me know if you want a set. I also have a complete wood wheel, power vent windows, a set of 4 note horns, power antennas, a complete rear defroster set up, mirrors, stainless, rear arm rest. headlight motors, a 66 fan shroud, turbine wheels, spoke caps, purse hooks, a set of 64 seat belts with only the buckle and strap (NOS) and a lot more. I also have some re-chromed items. If any one needs any thing special please let me know so I can pack it up. I am coming in a car so space is an issue. It should be a great meet. If interested let me know. I cannot price all of these because I have many items in varying conditions and this e-mail would go on and on.

Last July, I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to purchase a very nice '65 Gran Sport from a local Buick Club member whose family had owned the car since 1968. It had been garage kept just about the whole time and the condition reflected the care it had always received. All of the hard to find ($$$) parts such as the air cleaner housing, aluminum valve covers, wood steering wheel/hornbar, ribbed rocker moldings and chrome road wheels are in fantastic condition and look practically like NOS. I believe there is not a single pit in the chrome on the headlight visor assemblies. I did some minor work to the car and enjoyed driving for several months.

Eventually, I noticed a trail of brake fluid on the inside of one of the tires and I knew it was time for some serious investigation of the brake system. All four wheel cylinders and rear brake hose were still the original DELCO parts and they definitely needed attention. Having to do a major brake overhaul turned out to be the first step on the slippery slope of cleaning, detailing and replacing parts on the chassis and engine compartment. Before I knew it, I had the entire rear suspension, gas tank, rear bumper and exhaust system taken out. You know how it goes: "If I only remove these 4 bolts, then the whole (fill in the blank) comes right out".

Fortunately, the underside of the car was remarkably clean and all the fasteners came apart undamaged. I made some interesting discoveries along the way. I found numerous paint markings, the original paper part tags were still on both front springs and the original manufacturer's stenciling was like new on the top surface of the fuel tank. The shocks were all Delco, date coded 1968. The rears were air shocks and still functioned correctly so I kept them.

The exhaust system had a few "weak spots" so I installed a complete set of aluminized pipes. The previous owner had installed a NOS GS muffler which still looked new so it was retained. I rebuilt the original pipe hangers using fabric-reinforced rubber material. Getting everything to line up and fit without leaks is not a job for someone in a hurry!

I cleaned and painted the entire frame and recoated the original undercoating with 3M Professional rubberized material. I found that the 3M works best, it goes on nice, dries firm and stays black. Other cheaper brands tended to dry in a weird brown color which I did not like. I also cleaned the front wheel wells down to bare metal and painted and undercoated them as well. I will probably be setting off metal detectors in airports for the rest of my life due to the number of wire wheel bristles permanently embedded in my body as a result of this effort.

A complete set of replacement engine compartment baffles were easily made from sheet rubber. For you detail oriented folks, it appears Buick tried to cut costs by making some of the original baffles out of scrap inner tube and tire side wall material. I noticed the same thing on my '64.

One of the lower ball joints had been replaced in the past and I replaced the other due to a torn boot. Also replaced were the front suspension bumpers, swaybar bushings, endlinks and brake reaction rod bushings. I made my own version of the special spring compressor tool shown in the shop manual and it worked out great. A $40 ball joint press from Ebay was a good investment and made quick work of ball joint replacement.

While I was at the front end, I decided it would be a good time to completely go over the entire headlight operating system. Man, there must be about 14,000 parts that make it all work. After a good cleaning and lube job, everything was reinstalled and only one minor adjustment was needed to get visors to shut completely. I'm sure there were Buick mechanics back in the day who were sticking pins in a Voodoo doll of the engineer that designed the system.

The engine compartment was given a good cleaning and detailing. All new hoses, belts and rubber fuel lines were installed to assure trouble-free operation. Some of the fuel and heater hoses I removed appeared to be original which is a little scary knowing they are 48 years old. Correct replacement ignition wires, plugs and tune up parts were installed as well. I could not resist adding a set of 4 note horns which I took off my previous car prior to selling it. The long horn is from a '63, I believe, and the brackets are home made but I only paid about $12 for the pair in a junkyard 25 years ago. As a finishing touch, new engine compartment decals were applied.

I'm glad this work is done, many hours on your back under a car is no fun at all. Its a big effort to do something most people will never even notice but I like knowing that it is done well. Getting the little details correct is part of the fun and challenge of this hobby. My next step is to drive and enjoy this great car during the summer. Next fall/winter I plan on doing some additional engine detailing.

Thanks to all the forum members that assisted me with parts and information along the way.

Okay, here's a newbie question again:

Is it possible to inspect/verify crankshaft bearing damages without pulling the engine out? I have a slight knock at low RPM's, most audible when idling. I located the knock coming from the bottom of the engine, at the rear end of the oil pan.

I cannot hear the knock at higher RPM's. Also, the knock appears only after the engine has reached full operating temperature, so no knocking within the first minutes after start. The engine is working well, no excessive oil consumption, not much of a blue smoke. The oil pressure light doesn't glow.

Thanks.

I have feed up a stuck heat riser valve on my '65 and I am trying to determine if it is now working properly. When the thermostatic spring is installed, there is about 1/2 turn "windup" in the closing direction so that there is tension between the slot in the valve shaft and the pin that the outer end of the spring in in contact with. As the thermostatic spring gets heated up, it expands relieving the tension and the outer end of the spring will no longer be in contact with the stop pin. To me, the way it looks is that the spring does not actually force the valve to the open position. I believe the exhaust gas acting on the valve plate is supposed to push the valve open once the spring tension is relieved. My problem is that even when the engine is warmed up and I rev it up, the the valve is still in the closed position but I can easily rotate open. Should be so simple, what am I missing? I'd like to get it working properly and not just give up and wire it open permanently. Any information will be appreciated.
