I recently watched a video of Jay Leno talking about his 1915 Franklin. He mentions that it was so advanced for it's time that it had a 12 volt battery. Is this accurate? Would this have had a 12 volt system originally? It's a beautiful car!!

Thanks,

I've been considering replacing my 650x19 bias tires with radials, but I can't seem to find any information on how radials do on the full elliptical suspension of a Franklin. The geometry of the Franklin suspension seems like radials might make an improvement over the bias tires, but there seems to be little if any information on them. I run bias tires on my Lincolns and Chryslers, but these Franklins are so very different. Any experience with running radials on a series 15?

Forgot about all the 15mm nuts discovered on the sidedraft engine when I was taking it apart. All the big "9/16" nuts are much larger and take a 15 mm wrench/socket to remove/secure. That is exhaust manifold and valve cage nuts; maybe more, I am just putting upper end together and am reminded of it. If a sidedraft is on the road with only SAE, someone may be in for a rude awaking. Strikes me as somewhat unusual---love the large nuts tho !!;)

Plus what is the best way to fill the outside ring of the rim? the lip just inside the lock ring that gets beat up over the years by all the wrong tools use to remove the ring. Can I fill them with weld or will the heat hurt the rim? JB weld? body filler? If I use the filler how do I mount the wheel without damage the new paint?

Air in brake lines

After installing the dual master cylinder I find I must still have air in the system as I have a low pedal and can raise its by pumping the brake...

After installing the dual master cylinder I find I must still have air in the system as I have a low pedal and can raise its by pumping the brake pedal.
I bench bled the master cylinder before installing it. I then used a vaccum pump to pull the brake fluid through the system. Next I bled each wheel cylinder until I got only brake fluid in the bled hose dumping into a bottle ful of brake fluid. I Constantly kept an eye on the master cylinder to make sure it always had at least 1/4 full of fluid then I would fill it up again. I have bled the wheel cylinders about 10 times and gone through 2 quarts of brake fluid bleding the brakes. To eliminate the question of brake shoe to drum clearances I have the shoes set hard against the drums.
The system has a proportioning valve and 10# regulator valves in each line as reccomended for drum brakes.

I can still raise the pedal by pumping the brake pedal and am at a loss on how to get rid of the traped air ( assuming that is what is causing my problem). I noticed that there are several places in the system where the brake lines are at least 6: above the wheel cylinders and the master cylinder is under the floor which is also below the wheel cylinders.

The original master cylinder had its resivoir mounted on the firewall well above all wheel cylinders and all brake lines and hoses. I thaught that was for convience having a remote resivoir. I am now wondering if it is important to have the resivoir high like this.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to get all the air out of the system?

Thanks, Bob

Sidedraft rocker arm bushing lubrication?

Installed cylinders over the pistons; extremely easy. Also installed Jeff's air deflectors; looking forward to installing the lightweight pushrods. Now am cleaning the valve cages, pushrod tubes, etc for installation and am curious about an illogical finding. The chamfered recesses in the rocker arms with the "hole" that goes thru the bushing to lubricate the rocker shafts only go TO the bushing. This is against my upbringing !!! That might work if the bushings were oilite sintered bronze but I don't even believe they existed then. None of the rockers have holes at the chamfer to the shaft. Is this a factory error? There is no wear in the rockers at all by wiggling. Should I remove the rockers and drill a small hole or leave this alone? I do not plan to go on a cross-the-country tour !!! Hopefully just to town~~~~ Oh, am ordering copper washers,#94397A599, 5/8x1x.032, from McMaster-Carr to replace deformed washers at pushrod tube/valve cage. One other item: should the compensating stud nuts have hardened lock washers the same as the extension stud nuts. Thanks~~~ Richard ;)

In going over some stuff from my series 15 convertible coupe, I discovered a worn metal tag marked "convertible coupe" and "W. B. CO" with "body number 255". I confess that I don't know that much about Franklins, but I wonder if this is a tag from the Walker Body Company, the Amesbury MA company that built a lot of Franklin bodies? Since the tag was loose, I'm not even sure that the tag belongs to the car. If the tag does belong on the car, where would it be attached? I've included a photo of the car.

I am hopeful that someone can pin point my problem.
The engine starts fine and idles great, but when both cold and hot the engine appears to miss a beat and feels like a misfire, still pulls well but not as well as she could.

These are the checks that I have done and their results.

Compression on all cylinders is between 60-68 psi
Leak down test reveals leakage at about 30% in all cylinders into the crank case. No leakage through the valves. (probably because its all going into the crank case)
The plugs are burning very rich resulting and a lot of black soot out the exhaust but she never smokes.
I have tried advancing the timing whilst underload but no improvement, just makes it worse.
The valves were replaced with ones from a Massey Ferguson tractor back in the 1970's
The pistons were also changed and I note that they now only have 3 rings and not the 4 as on the Franklin drawings.
The carburetor float level is correct and she has new economiser parts. Jets have not been changed.
Rocker valve clearances seem to keep changing and I now check and adjust them every 2 weeks. I run her every weekend.
Valve cages have been levelled off and rockers sitting nicely on the valve stems. Push rods rattle a little but due to replace with the new ones I got from the club if I can get them to fit.
I have installed a conductive discharge unit to protect the points. All ignition components are new except the distributor body. Plugs are NGK AB6.
No inlet leakage, tested with water on joints.

Is she being choked by the rich fuel mixture?
