I also wanted to post... my wife will NOT let me buy this as I have 4 cars already that need fixed 3 40's & a 49 commander...

A mechanic's garage in a small town near where I live has a 38 Dictator sitting out in the elements... he bought it last year for a steal... but I think he thinks it is worth a fortune... anyway... he is a collector of sorts... up until he bought this car, it was kept indoors in a barn or garage... now he has it outback of his shop and left it there all winter... I almost cry everytime I drive by it. I tried to make a deal with him on it... but he seemed uninterested in anything other than my "best" car... which is on the road... not worth it to me, but almost....

The skiny on the car... before winter this past year... the body was VERY solid... the interrior was ratty and it wouldn't run... I have since learned that the car has a broken transmission and something else... but the engine is good.

If anyone wants info on this car, let me know.. It is my favorite Stude of all time next to the 40... I just cannot swing it and I DON'T want to see it chopped.. and that is exactly what he will do... rod it or let it rot...

Ok, I have a quick question... I have been all over th eweb, seriously... multiple times...
I recently bought 2 40 commander 4 dr sedans... One of them, originally from Arizona, via Georgia to me...
I have seen a lot of hood trim for the 40's.. and I know the 40 was unique in many ways...

My question is this... the top nose trim (that runs down the center of the hood) is stainless steel... all of the other 40's I have seen have plain flat trim... Including my other 2.

But on one of my cars, there is a raised section and a "slot" where an acrylic (?) ornament goes.... I have th epiece and it is definitely "aged" and goes to that slot.

Was this an original option? Or is the hood from a different year? The hood is "original" it is Studebaker and the center line trim was NOT customized to make it fit.... the hood itself is the correct size for the car also.

So what is the deal with this weird trim on the hood?

Any help or direction would be great!

thxs,

Recently found my front yoke on the drive-shaft was damaged by a worn out u-joint. It was suggested to me to advertise for a used one via AACA. The front flange is 4 and 1/2 inches in dia. and my model Dictator is a GE when it comes to parts, and has 6 holes about 2 inches apart. Would be interested in a complete front universal that would slip on the splines on the drive-shaft. This would include the yoke, the u-joint, the flange, the casing, and spring. Thanks for anyone who may reply.

Finally got my drive shaft off my 1928 Dictator, and found the front u-joint was "toast", and has damaged the yoke. Can anyone tell me if the yoke can be repaired, as the u-joint has opened the holding holes in the yoke. A new u-joint will not be held tightly in place at this point. A new yoke would be the answer, but finding one will probably be an issue. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Any drive train specialist out there???? And does anyone know if the yoke screws onto the drive shaft, or driven on....???? Thanks for any information you may share.

I just bought what I believe is a '30 Studebaker turned doodlebug. It has a complete six-cylinder engine, transmission, cowl and dash, basically the front half of the car. Has sat outside for many years. The exhaust manifold is cracked.

I bought it to use the frame under another car, so the rest of it is surplus and I'd be willing to part it out if anyone needs pieces.

I haven't run the numbers/cowl tag data but it appears to be a Commander based on looking at photos.
Appears to have a Mack Truck rearend in it, also.

I managed to get that out but now I want to remove the distributor and and vac advance for some cleanup and study. What am I missing? I have the screw that sets the octane selector removed and the clamp screw entirely out. It is now about an 1/8th of an inch further out and will not go back in and will not come all the way out either. Do I need to spread the clamp further?

First, I am not a experienced mechanic. But I am brave and try to tackle most projects with hope. I found that my front u-joint has a lot of "play", and would explain the vibration when getting to 30-35 mph. Am asking if anyone has replaced their u-joints and could give me some words of wisdom. It appears that the casing that houses the u-joint and the yoke will need to be removed. Mine is breaking up, and is split almost all the way around. I can see inside and there is a spring visible. I have taken the 6 bolts loose that holds the casing, but don't seem to see how it comes off. Something else has to come off first. If you have "been there and done that", you will know what I mean, and can probably help me take the next step. I am hoping you won't tell me the drive shaft has to come down from the rear axle. I would appreciate beyond words any insight you can give me. This can't be that difficult, once one knows what to do.... Thanks in advance for anyone who responds. Stuck until you respond.....

Solid rust free front fenders, a NOS left front fender skin, spare hood, trunk and rear fenders. All new weather stripping, door sills and a completely rebuilt engine. I was asking $2500.00 for it and told that is too high. Thoughts?
