My 89 trofeo has developed a start up and go problem. Sometimes hard to start and back blows to the air cleaner. finally starts step on the gas to and falls flat, pump the pedal and picks up and goes great. Drive 20 miles to work, stand all day, start up to go home in the afternoon starts with a flick of the key. I have replaced the harmonic balancer (looked ragged at the rubber line), fuel filter air filter and pump relay. Could it be a leaking injector or coil pack? Any ideas? When I come to a stop the idle will fluctuate between 625 and 750 sporadically. I have also cleaned the IAC.

I changed the belt-tensioner on my 1990 Reatta coupe. While trying to remove one of the bolts, I had to pry on the pipe that goes into the block right above the water pump Needless to say, when all was put together, there is a slight leak at the pipe to engine connection. Will removing the pipe and wrapping it with some teflon or some other tape help?? I went on a 100 mile trip and it did not overheat. Just lost about 3 cups of water..

I have not had functioning courtesy lamps since I purchased my Reatta nearly a year ago. I have the FSM, but am having a problem figuring out which micro-relay, in the trunk on the pass side wheel well, is the "position B" courtesy lamp relay.

The FSM is 8A-114-11 through 8A-114-13. I am unable to find a diagram that identifies what functions the micro-relays are associated with. Does anyone have info and/or experience with this?

Thanks....

Hey guys, everything was going alright then one day when i turned it on it was running really rough, as in not on all cylinders. I remembered this behavior from before and it was the spark wires and i have replaced them before. I had the rest of the box of the wires left so i put them on (only one was replaced with this box previously). Didn't get better. So... i replaced the spark plugs and the module! NOW it is even less intermittent. it will run badly and randomly just jump out of it and if i accelerated then i could "ride" that jump to it running correctly, until i slowed down and it seemed like it would catch into it again when i would try to accelerate again.... It smells so bad, like my car is just dumping half burned gasoline, its all you smell. When i look at the gauges it seems like at lower speeds (below 45) it will shift okayish and just at 45-50 it shudders like crazy and its horrid to go faster, as if it wont shift higher. any high speed it is brutal to get it to and it just wants to slow down. the oil psi cyclically goes from 225-45 range and my volts are rather high and 14.1 ish which is not normal to the 13.4 ish range of before. Checked the vacuum and injectors and they're fine.
I'm so stressed and upset when my baby isn't running right i feel like i am murdering her every time i drive, i cannot stand it. what is it?! >_< O2 sensor? ECM? CPS? PCM?

I got tired of looking through the film that built up on the inside of my windshield (non-smoking car) and was cleaning it when I noticed that both of my sunvisors covering has worn thin to the point of splitting on some of the seams and just look nasty. I thought that it was the same material that is used on the headliner and I have seen that at JO-Anns fabrics in a very close dove gray, but it is much thinner. Is it best to take them to an upholstery shop and have them do it, expensive? Can a lay person do it if I can find the fabric, I see it is sewn along the edges which is beyond my limited talents. I would think that any found in a parts car would be in same condition. All ideas welcome.
Thank You,

I repaired some damage to my '91 Grey steering wheel today using this: Fiebing's Leather Dye Grey. I found it at: Fiebing's Leather Dye w Applicator 28 Colors 4 Oz | eBay It is a great match and covered up the areas where I got too rambunctious cleaning. After letting dry overnight I'll protect it with this: Collonil Waterstop #253 light grey also found at : Collonil Waterstop Leather Shoe Boot Polish Waterproof 11 Colors 2 5 Oz | eBay Already looks like new but I think a waterproofing treatment will extend the life a bit more so I won't have to treat it again for another 20 years. I looked locally without any success for something to repair the damage this but it seems most folks don't dye or polish shoes like they used to so it was unavailable. Polish alone won't do it as it contains almost no dye just wax.

I have had my current 90 convert for about 4 years. It has always had a longer crank time (2-3 seconds) before starting. Lately it will intermittently not start when it is warm / hot. It runs fine hot or cold but if I shut it off it may or may not restart because of no spark. If I keep trying it will eventually start. It may take 3 tries or 20+, it's a complete roll of the dice. The original ignition module was leaking the "green goo" so I got a bought a used Magnavox and a used Delco coil and module. The Delco acted the same and the Magnavox misfired when hot. I decided to upgrade to the Delco coils and purchased a new A/C Delco D1977A module, mounted the (3) used coils to it and installed new A/C #14 plugs gapped at .060. I still have the intermittent start. Any suggestions? Thanks

My 1990 coupe AC seems to stop cooling intermittantly. I disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect and it starts cooling again. I put my gauges on it and with ambiant temp at 82F, the low side is at 45 and the high side is at 245 after reaching normal engine operating temperature. With the thermometer in the center vent and the fan on high it is showing in the mid 40s. It may cool for a day or a week and then it stops cooling. Could the system be getting shut down by the pressure sensor(s) for some reason? Is the low side pressure of 45 be too high? Thoughts appreciated! Thanks.

Regarding wheel speed sensors for the 1991 Reatta ABS, are they similar in design/construction (and where they are installed) to the 1990 MY? Do they have the same issues like most 1990 models where the insulation wears down due to road/driving conditions making the sensors faulty?

I'll be looking at a couple 1991 cars this weekend. While neither have brake issues, I was wondering should they in the future, are 1991 Reatta wheel speed sensors an issue like the 1988-1990 model years (and are they more readily available for '91s)?

I was considering experimenting with adding an overhead console like this one from another GM car. Wonder if I could wire in that trip computer display too. Thoughts?

I had an 8:00 am appointment this am to have replaced the front sway bar bushings. I had been having a rattle in the front end so the guys at Baumgarts put the car up on a rack and eyeballed around and determined that the bushings were bad. Well they were right and now the rattle is gone. as I was checking out, the mechanic who did my work asked me what Buick my wheels were off. I told him the 2004 [or so] Buick LeSabre. [They are the chrome 16" 7 spoke wheels I talked about earlier] But that I had used nail polish to add a little color to the tri shields on the center caps. He said he liked them a bit better then the Lucerne wheels and that they were 16" wheels which were more of a stock wheel for the car.
Then as I was leaving a get a phone call from the "Appleton Ghost" better known as 2Seater. He wanted to know where the Bonnie was that had the Teves. So I quick zip out to Gibson's to meet up with Hal and help him with the car. By the time I got there he had found the car and already had the pump/motor removed. So we had a nice visit and eye balled each other's cars.
Then back to work [at least for me]
Nice meeting you Hal!

I understand the knock thread had been detoured so I started a separate thread. I did a quick test with the two inductive lights I have, one is an Innova and the other an old Sears. In a quick test, the Sears only fires in the correct polarity position on the coil I tested, so it would seem that my statement was incorrect, at least sort of. The Innova also has a tach function, and I did not actually try the timing light itself, but just checked to see if the tach operated. It appears to operate in either direction, despite the polarity arrow. The only peculiarity is it reads double rpm in one direction, as it should, but normal rpm in the other? I certainly don't understand all of the details of how this all works?

The other test was to see what happens if a plug wire is disconnected, but the test is somewhat inconclusive. If I pull the wire at the coil pack, the other plug wire does continue to operate, however the open terminal arcs to a mounting screw, so the coil is still going to ground, so I would guess the circuit is still complete? It does kill only the disconnected cylinder, but I do not know if it would still be true if there were no path to/from ground like pulling the wire from the plug itself?

The results are somewhat different than what I have found before, so it may be the tight confines of the hookup itself, operator error, or the quality of the instruments themselves? It's more out of curiosity than a serious issue, but if anyone else would try the same test, I would be very interested in the results. I will look at it further when time permits and a cooler engine.

Hi,

Assistance, please. I've a 1991 Reatta Convertible and recently replaced the top. Here's my problem in as few words as possible.

There is a semicircular cover which, when the top is up, lies behind the seats and the rear window. One edge is "velcroed", but the second is connected by two straps to the top to keep it in place and taunt when the windows are down and the top up. They are about 4 - 6z" long and 45 degree angled outward towards the outside lower corners of the framework of the top. Where do those straps connect?
Assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dick

I have seen another company using Danny Koker from the show Counting Cars and the Pawn Star show. The work his shop turns out is beyond perfect. This new company shows him putting it on headlights and other plastic parts and he says it will last a year. One thing I noticed was this product does not require wearing gloves like the other one does. Anybody think it would restore the rear light panel to clear? I have to buff mine every few months with Meguiars plastic polish and a buffing pad in a cordless drill. I have also used Blue Coral plastic window polish, same results. Plus it is available at most Wallgreens.

I just completed replacing my taillight assembly with a used assembly sent to me by Daves89. Thanks Dave!

I had to transfer my old BUICK letters from my old taillight to the new-to-me taillight. I was shocked at how loose the letters were when I started removing them. They were practically ready to fall off. The letter "I" only had about 1/4 of of it holding on one end. You can't really tell it unless you look close because the letters are recessed into the plastic lens of the taillight. I used a wooden toothpick to flip them off. Once I had the letters off the adhesive, which had turned to a dry black compound, could be scraped off the letters with my thumbnail. Very little adhesion left to it.

I thought I would pass this on so others can check to see if their letters are in a similar condition before they fall off. It's easy to re-stick them with double faced emblem tape while you have all the letters. They letters need to be cleaned with alcohol or something similar before reinstalling them.
