One all original older restoration and wrecked, one not so original and far from being road worthy. Thinking one needs to be a parts car for the other, but having a hard time coming to terms with "scrapping" one car....

Just as the title says, my Dad is in the hospital. He was at work yesterday and began having chest pains. The pain progressed until it literally brought him to his knees. He DROVE HIMSELF to the hospital, walked in, and said ,"I think I'm having a heart attack." He was indeed having a major heart attack. They transferred him to another hospital in Rome that has a comprehensive heart unit and he immediately went into surgery. He had a major artery blockage and they put in two stents. He spent the night in CCU and they moved him to a private room today. He's doing good. Just sore. If everything is OK tonight he will go home tomorrow. I can't believe he drove himself to the emergency room. The chest pains actually began the day before while he was mowing the grass. Then later that day we were moving the Buick around the yard, lifting heavy blocks, and even lifted the Dynaflow! He just thought it was indigestion. Miracle that he is OK. Just thought I'd let you all know since I share our lives with you guys quite a bit.

If you are traveling to Fredricksburg for the BDE tour next weekend, and coming from the Dallas area, I-35 appears to be the likely choice. I-35 is a good interstate but crowded.

An alternate route is to go to the west of I-35 and catch US 281 south. This is an excellant road and much if it is 4 lanes. The speed limit in most parts is 70 mph if you want to run that fast but if in an older Buick you can drive slower without getting run over. Once you get to the Dallas area, cut over to 281 via US 67 thru Cleburne and you intersect 281 at Hico TX (there are a couple antique shops and places to eat) Lampassas is another place to eat. Marble Falls has the Blubonnet Cafe on the east side of the road before you go over the river....good home cooking and plenty of pie options. When you reach Johnson City head west on 290 into Fredricksburg.

If you have any other questions about Central Texas we will try to help. Honk if you go thru Georgetown.....but we will be leaving Saturday morning ourselves.

See you in Fredricksburg.

I have a question about the chrome finish on the 57 Caballero in this photo, which was originally posted by Bleach in the "GIRLS ON BUICKS IV" thread.

Does the chrome look unusual to anyone else? It has a kind of matte non-reflective finish. It appears to be a period photo taken by a professional -- in the days before digital photography and digital photo software; so could the surface have been treated with something in order to prevent it from reflecting the photography studio equipment and lights? Or was the chrome that dull ordinarily?

Last weekend, BCA members helped the Baker Garage in Baker City, Oregon celebrate 100 years in business. Members traveled from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California to participate in the event, marking the century milestone for one of the oldest continuously operating Buick dealerships in the USA.

Not only did we celebrate this wonderful small-town dealership, but we honored 59 years of service at the Baker Garage by Glenn Daugherty. Glenn began selling Buicks at the Baker Garage during May, 1954, and continues with the dealership today. Glenn acquired an ownership stake in 1972, and became sole owner during the early-1980's. Today, Glenn's son, Randy, owns and operates the dealership with his father.

The Baker Garage is in my hometown of Baker City, Oregon, located about 300 miles east of Portland in the Blue Mountain area of Eastern Oregon. There are no large population centers nearby, so the Buicks arrived from a wide geographical area. The Baker Garage generously allowed owners of the collectible Buicks to store their cars inside the dealership for both Friday and Saturday nights.

My parents began buying cars and pickup trucks from the Baker Garage in October, 1960, purchasing the town's first 1961 Buick from Glenn Daugherty.

The 100-year celebration began Friday evening with a prime-rib banquet for 110+ people at the Geiser Grand Hotel, a restored 1889 hotel located one-half block from the Baker Garage. The hotel staff worked with the dealership to prepare a PowerPoint slide show of the early history of Baker City, the arrival of the automobile in the area, and the Baker Garage. I had an opportunity to speak about my personal memories of the dealership and Buick owners in Baker City. Later that evening, my wife and I hosted Buick Club members in our third floor cupola suite for champagne and dessert.

On Saturday morning, we organized a display of our twenty-five collectible Buicks, headlined by Mark and Rinda Shaw's 1913 Buick Model 31 touring car. The photos below show the Buick display, which was open to the public from 9:00 AM to noon and well-attended by members of the Baker City community. The dealership opened up its showroom for additional displays and goodies for the public and Buick owners. The car show was laid out in front of the dealership building, which the Baker Garage has occupied since 1917.

Many people remembered my 1959 Electra, which was delivered new by the Baker Garage to a prominent merchant in the community, and it was great for me to see many members of my family as well as former high school teachers and friends. I left Baker City for college in 1971, so have not spent a great deal of time there for many years.

The goal with our Buick show was to engage people about the history of our cars and provide examples of the kinds of cars that the Baker Garage has sold over its 100 year history. From my standpoint, it was a huge success.

Among the many interesting Buicks displayed was a 1963 LeSabre factory 4-speed car from Pendleton, Oregon:

Following the car display, Mark & Rinda Shaw offered rides in the 1913 Buick to members of the Daugherty family, then showed the car to Chet Smith, who is a 102-year old resident and decades-long owner of the former Pontiac and International-Harvester dealership.

I was pleased to get my nearly 97=years old father out to the car show, and here's my Dad and my wife, LynnD, as we're dropping him back at his assisted living facility:

Steve Fisher from the Seattle area brought along some of his wonderful displays of Buick promotional items from the past, and these were shown at both the Friday evening banquet and Saturday morning car show:

I think Randy Daugherty's e-mail to me this week perfectly sums up the reason for the Baker Garage's long-term success:

"It certainly was a great weekend. We also heard many positive comments and thank you’s. As I have mentioned Dad and I have never been “Front Page Guys” and we don’t look for accolades. Our reward is what happened over the weekend. A successful and great event. We just like to come to work every day take care of our customers in a fair and honest way. I believe that is how Baker Garage has been able to make it work for all these years. To think Baker Garage has survived since 1913 is amazing. Plus, currently the oldest operating Buick Dealership in the country started in 1907 (Garber Buick) in Michigan and we are only 6 years behind them. WOW!"

Randy displayed his own collector Buick, a beautiful, all-original 1973 Riviera, as part of our show:

Of course, there was an additional component of the weekend's fun, and that was the tour from the Seattle area for the many cars that made the trek, so I'll add to this topic as time permits.

Preparing to leave the Geiser Grand Hotel on Sunday morning:

I’ve been wanting to ask this question for a while. Concerning 1951/52 Buick Special Sport Coupes in the Standard Series, is the entire greenhouse, along with the rear side windows, shorter from front to back as compared to the regular two door sedan? Of course, the rear windows could not be more different. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one of the sport coupes except in photos. But the photos I’ve seen look pretty different than the two door sedans. How similar is the Buick Sport Coupe greenhouse to the Pontiac & Chevrolet sport coupes, along with the Oldsmobile club coupe?

My dad dropped this off last week.

What is interesting is the date of the ad, late 1954. The comments about a sales push. Buick, as we know, finished very well in 1954 and 1955. To give some perspective, Columbus Junction Iowa, where my dad and mom are from - was about 3000 population in 1954. Small dealership. Not sure if this was an ad paid for and sponsored by Buick, with Buick control, or paid for by the dealership. I suspect Buick. Interesting they chose to feature a Century 2 door hardtop in a town where virtually every Buick was likely a 4 door Special. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/attachments/f115/192547d1368152973t-1954-buick-newspaper-ad-bicycles-001.jpg" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

LeMay Museum, questions about the fiberglass-bodied 1964 Buick Wildcat

As many of you know from prior topics on this forum, the LeMay Car Museum in Tacoma received the donation of a 1964 Buick Wildcat 2-door hardtop. I saw the car today, and it is beautiful!

The unique aspect of the car is that the body is constructed mostly of fiberglass, and was a concept proposed by the Ionia Body Mg. division of the Mitchell-Bentley Corporation.

Since production of the full-size, Ionia-bodied Buick and Oldsmobile wagons was slated to end at the conclusion of the 1964 model year, Ionia Body was actively proposing other projects to the auto manufacturers.

You will notice from these current photos that the front fender ornamentation differs from the regular production 1964 Wildcat:

Are there any 1964 Buick experts here who can respond to the following codes I've received from one of the volunteers at the Museum?

VIN located on door pillar 6K1221604

Engine # CK1221604

number stamped on firewall X 4459645

No trim tag found

I assume that the VIN and engine numbers should be identical, in which case the first character might have been mis-read on either the VIN or the engine.

Please advise if you can interpret any of the numbers.

Gentlemen and Ladies,

I am the proud owner of a 62 Le Sabre that I'm trying to restore on my own. The first thing I'm trying to do is fix the leak at the front of the transmission. Is there a way to fix this without pulling the motor/transmission? Is there a thread here already that I some how missed? My only guess is that it is the front seal leaking.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
