Front bearing failures-FWD 97-05 Park Avenues

I seem to be going through a lot of front hub bearings on my 2000 Park Avenue Ultra. I've also found a lot of other GM owners that use the same bearing part number are having to replace these bearings every couple of years.

I also noticed NO ONE sells these hub bearings at the retail level (Auto Zone, O'Reilly, Pep Boys, etc.) with a lifetime warranty any more, which also suggests the manufacturers know they fail a lot. Most companies have dropped their coverage to 1 year, and Auto Zone's economy line of parts now only covers the bearings for 90 days.

All of the hub bearings have the same generic number, 513121, although some stores use their own internal stock numbers. And, these bearings are all made in China. All of the bearings are sealed, can't be taken apart and inspected for wear spots or to see what is causing the bearings to fail. I suspect the seals are the weak spot, because I've noticed the bearings are more likely to fail after we have a lot of rain here in South Texas.

There is at least one company that sells an American-made version of them via mail order with a lifetime warranty, but you have to get their authorization before returning a part, and pay the shipping for a fairly heavy part. Other than that, no one seems to sell a bearing with a warranty longer than one year.

I use a torque wrench set to the correct setting (118 lbs-ft) for the Park Avenue, but the bearings seem to go out about every 1.5-2 years.

My questions are these:

1. Has anyone found a brand or retailer that sells a bearing that lasts longer than the others?
2. Has anyone found any installation proceedure that seems to lengthen the life of the bearings?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Joe

I own a 1990 LeSabre Custom 4 door and the headliner is finally sagging as with any car this old may. I have replaced the headliner material in my 1989 Reatta myself and that was a snap but this one has me confused. I have the Buick factory service manual(s) for this model but it does not show how you remove the plastic trim from above and around the doors to get the headliner out. I can't find any screws holding them in and I know some cars use clips but this trim is so tight that I don't want to just start pulling on it to find out and then break the trim. Replacing the headliner material is a simple job only if I can get the darn thing down.

Does someone out there know how the trim is mounted and how to remove it without damaging it?

Motor Oil: Zinc and Other Myths

There's a lot of well-intended advice floating around about "zinc" in motor oil, including allegations that the latest (new car) oils are harmful to our old cars.

While I'm no expert on this, I am fortunate to have a good friend who IS just such an expert, as well as a member of our hobby. While he is, by nature, a modest individual that likes to stay out of the controversy, I felt it would be helpful to the collector car community to share some of my friend's knowledge on the subject. His attached document about various historic myths surrounding motor oil is both factual, as well as entertaining, and was written to respond to the numerous requests he receives on the topic. Note that it addresses the alleged "zinc issue" very well. (See attached PDF file)

By way of introduction, Mr. Robert Olree is one of the foremost experts on motor oil in the world. His careers at Ethyl Corporation and GM Research are marked with considerable recognition for his extensive contributions to the industry. Among his many technical publications is an SAE research paper (#2004-01-2986) entitled "How Much ZDP is Enough". Due to copyright restrictions, I cannot post this document, but it is available through SAE and most technical libraries (Universities, etc) can obtain it for you. Anyone interested in fact-over-fiction on the zinc topic should read it.

For those that want the bottom line, it is this:
1. Current modern (i.e. "new car") oils contain adequate "zinc" for protection of flat-tappet engines that are already broken-in.
2. Appropriate assembly lube should continue to be utilized on new cam & lifters to prevent scuffing during break-in. However, these assembly lubes (like GM Engine Oil Supplement & Assembly Lube) should NOT be used beyond break-in period (see #3 below)
3. Excessive "zinc" additives can actually cause excessive wear and should be avoided.

I love my son , hes the greatest. But if your wondering why it seems like I fell off the face of the earth for the last few months........ well you need to ask Tim. I am an AOL subscriber and my son who enjoys "experimenting" with various mechanical and electronic devices decided that we needed internet explorer. Well we got internet explorer in spades. It didnt matter what you did internet explorer got in the way. Every time I tried to sign on my AOL would come up my "Youve got mail " would speak then internet explorer would come up and everything would freeze. the only way to unfreeze it was to pull the plug on the computer. My wife has worked some kind of miracle and has made it work again ...... just when I thought we would have to get a new computer.

And the point of this rant ?

Man am I glad to be back !!!!!!!!! Ive been going through withdrawl and with winter coming on it was getting critical. Gotta run I just saw Tim heading out to the garage

View Art

I bought my 1st Buick in 1993, a forlorn 56 Special 2 door hardtop.

In 1994 I moved to Helena, Montana and the Special had to stay in Houston, Texas.

While browsing what amounted to a "mall" in Helena I spotted this poster. I quickly recognized this car was a Buick, even though I was still a "newbie" to the hobby.

I later learned four port holes meant a Roadmaster. I purchased the poster and it resides in my garage but I look forward to re-purchasing this one and having it professionally framed.

It's very iconic, and although the 50 Roadmaster 2 door hardtop is not befinned, I think it, at the beginning of an ambitious decade for Buick, represents all that is good about the 1950-1959 Buicks.

I originally purchased a cheesy clear plastic frame for my poster purchased in 1994 but that covering cracked and I tossed it. "Driven Wild" is now affixed to my garage wall and I have thought from time to time to check the Internet for a replacement - which I finally did. Thankfully, the artist is still active and I look forward to getting the replacement print and having it professionally framed this time around.

I'm reading in my 1950 Buick Shop Manual that 'light detonation' is normal in the 263 even when timing is correct and also using premium fuel.
Would that be a slight 'rattle' in the exhaust when the engine is under load above 30 mph? Other than the knocking, it runs & idles very smoothly. The temp. stays 1/3 from "C" unless poking along in a parade. Mileage averages 12 to 14 mpg.
Anyone else with this same engine have these issues?
When I push the gas slowly to the floor, the knocking gets much more severe. The book indicates premium fuel for the 263 Dynaflow 7.2 compression ratio.
I'm pretty sure todays 10% Ethanol gas is rated differently. Is 93 octane today sufficient to run a 59 year old engine smoothly? Or is there something about Ethanol that makes my motor knock? Several car club friends have indicated so and I should go back to 87.
I could start retarding the timing back from 4BTDC at the expense of less power and lower mileage. Anyone else try that and get any results?

Buicks Love for Old Glory

As I'm sure many of us recognize, Buick has long displayed it's patriotic love and appreciation for country by displaying the colors of Old Glory right on the cars itself in the way of badges, ornaments etc. I just wanted to post this and open a discussion relative to that fact and hopefully learn more about this. Does anyone know when the first "Colors" were displayed on the cars.

I found this old early 1900's post card on ebay which testifies to the fact that they paid tribute to Old Glory back then.

and when someone asked over on the 1954Buick.com forum what the colors names and formulas for the paint for 54 Buick emblems and trunk ornament were, here was the reply.

>Color names? ......Old Glory Red, Old Glory White and Old Glory Blue.

Formulas? well, just mix up some courage, hardiness, valor and blood for the Red, purity and innocence for the White and vigilance, perseverance and lots of God for the Blue.

Seriously, forty6R, these colors below in a rattle can will work just fine. In fact the first time I bought paint for these pieces, I used a flag that was on sale in the hardware store where I bought paint. Just be careful that the blue isn't too dark.

I know some of the moderators don't like some of the off topic stuff, but I think something is wrong if this community of forum members can't take a moment to consider the sacrifices made by the armed forces of our nations.

The last couple of days I've been thinking about how Buick changed, particularly for the second world war. We have seen a number of staff cars here. We also have the changes that occurred in the Buick factories, switching from automobile production to the Hellcat tank destroyers and Liberator bomber production. It seems to me I've seen something about it, but I should really try to find out how GM of Canada changed their production - I know they did, but I'm not sure what they manufactured.

Since Buick was making trucks during part of the first world war, it makes me wonder how many made their way over to Europe for transport or ambulances, if any.

Greetings.
My name is Mike, and I hail from Colorado Springs.
I have been into vintage cars for a while now, I had a 51 chevy truck that I drove literally every day for 4 years. Rain, snow, shine...
It was an inline 6 and still 6 volt...
Well I sold my truck and stepped up to a 53 buick special...
Family car was what I had in mind...
Currently I am sorting out all of her quirks as she is bone stock...
I am looking to learn all about the world of Buicks...
Any one in the Springs?
I intend to make this inline 8 my daily driver...
I just need to get her sorted out...
Thanks!!

m

Hit me up..I'm always down for drinkin a beer or soda and talkin cars..

Hi,

I haven't driven my car for about a month while away. I started and moved it a couple days ago to get something out of the garage... all was fine. Today I went out to drive it and the brake pedal was completely spongy and would push all the way to the floor -- no brakes! My car is a 1956 Century with stock manual drum brakes.

Does anyone know what could have caused this and what to look for? As of now the car only stops with the emergency brake.
Thanks

Back in Feb I finally found a company that was rebuilding the elc compressors for many GM and Ford cars....

Back in Feb I finally found a company that was rebuilding the elc compressors for many GM and Ford cars. http://www.suncoreindustries.com/"]Suspension, Air Suspension, Parts, Conversion, Kits, Air Ride, Airbags, Shocks, Coils, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Hummer, Range Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Toyota - Suncore Industries.[/URL] However they didn't rebuild the 79-85 systems, just the 95-99 and various other GM's from 86-current. After discussing with the Supervisor that the air dryer in these compressors for the Riv had a valving arrangement just for E-bodies that needed to maintain 15-20 psi at all times they agreed to rebuild it since, "they were all the same pretty much" according to the company. The valving arrangement is just a couple of springs and a rubber flap like a check valve that is inside the dryer on the system. I have finally got around to getting this rebuilt compressor on the car. I've also built myself an ELC tester very similar to the ones the service manual says to use (pictured) Now I've found that the rebuilt compressor is leaking down after about two hours. There were a few hicups during this rebuild process with the company Rep finally saying they were not going to rebuild these anymore for the 79-85 models!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these compressors rebuilt where they don't leak down? I'm suprised more people aren't having trouble with these.

Is there any other company out there that maybe I don't know about that would consider rebuilding these? Since our 79-85's are getting some collector attention I'm sure the need for these will be more in demand, not to mention it's the same compressors used for Eldo and Toro of this vintage.

Sorry but manually adding air to the system is not something I'm interested in doing. Pictured is the tester I made for these systems. Mine is permantely mounted for the time being.

Anyone have any ideas of maybe companies to go to, to try and get them to consider a rebuilding program on these? So far no one rebuilds any of these for the Big Buicks, Oldsmobiles or Cadillacs!
